This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years) Kia Optima sedan in changing a weak or dead 12V automotive battery for the Theta II 2.4 liter GDI inline four cylinder engine. (The procedure should be the same or very similar for the Theta II 2.0L Turbo I4 engine.)

Owners of other Kia, Hyundai or Genesis vehicles such as the Niro, Sportage, Sedona, Telluride, Sorento, Rio, Forte, Soul, K900, Cadenza, K5, Stinger, Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, Venue, G70, G80 and G90 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM battery is a "Group Size" 94R (also known as H7) and the Kia / Hyundai part number is AGM70L-DIN.

Two compatible replacement aftermarket batteries with their part numbers are as follows: ACDelco 94RAGM and the EverStart Platinum AGM H7 (at Walmart).

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet, a 12mm socket with a long extension bar and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

Locate the two black metal bolts that secure the front edge of the air intake assembly to the radiator cover at the front of the engine bay.
