This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 GM Chevrolet Cruze in changing a burnt
out cargo area light bulb located in the housing attached to the ceiling of
the trunk. Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Holden such as the Sonic, Spark, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Bolt, Camaro, Corvette, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Colorado, Silverado, Express, TrailBlazer, Encore, Regal TourX, Envision, Enclave, LaCrosse, Cascada, Sierra, Canyon, Acadia, Terrain, Yukon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT5, CTS-V, XTS, CT6, ATS, Astra and Commodore may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number 8W 6R2 (8 Watts). A few compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulbs include the 2825 (4.8W), W5W (5W), 168 (4.9W) or 194 (3.78W) can be used as a replacement. If you would like to have a brighter cargo area light that will also last a lot longer before burning out, install a 2825 LED bulb. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. The first two steps are to open the trunk and locate the housing attached to the ceiling near the two trunk lid torsion bars. There is a small notch situated on the left (driver) side of the light housing. |

Pry Out Light Housing |
Light Housing Removed |

Insert the blade of
a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool into the notch on
the left (driver) side of the light housing. Gently pry the light housing out of the ceiling of the cargo area. Pull the light housing out of the metal body panel. |
||
Push In Release Tab |
Disconnect Power Plug |
|
Push in the release
tab on the black plastic electrical connector before sliding it straight out
of its socket. If the old light bulb was recently turned on, allow it to cool off for at least a few minutes. |
||
Old Light Bulb Exposed |
Push Bulb Out of Socket |
|
Use the screwdriver
or plastic pry bar tool to carefully push the base of the old light bulb
straight out of the socket. The old bulb should pop out of the socket relatively easily. Try to avoid using excessive force. |

Miniature Wedge Base |
|
The OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number 8W 6R2 (8
watts). You can replace the bulb with other miniature wedge base light bulbs such as the 2825 (4.8W), W5W (5W), 168 (4.9W) or 194 (3.78W). If you would like a brighter cargo area light that will last a lot longer before burning out and use less energy, install a compatible replacement 2825 LED bulb. |
||
Push In New Light Bulb |
Push In Power Plug |
|
Slide the new bulb
straight into the socket. Push the power plug straight into the socket on the base of the light housing. You should feel or hear the plug "click" securely into place. |
||
Pop In Retaining Clip |
Test New Light Bulb |
|
Re-insert the wires
and base of the light housing. Then gently snap in the retaining clip on the left (driver) side of the housing. The new light bulb should have turned on as soon as you re-inserted the electrical connector. If the new bulb didn't turn on, press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights. If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. For more,
