This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 GM Chevrolet Cruze in changing a burnt out dome light bulb in the overhead housing attached to the headliner above the rear passenger seats.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Holden such as the Sonic, Spark, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Bolt, Camaro, Corvette, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Colorado, Silverado, Express, TrailBlazer, Encore, Regal TourX, Envision, Enclave, LaCrosse, Cascada, Sierra, Canyon, Acadia, Terrain, Yukon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT5, CTS-V, XTS, CT6, ATS, Astra and Commodore may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as W5W).

If you would like to have a brighter dome light, install a 2825 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic pry bar tool (also known as a "trim panel removal tool").

Insert the blade of the screw driver in between the translucent plastic lens cover and the overhead light housing.

Gently pry out the lens cover.

Gently Pop Out Lens
You may need to re-insert the screwdriver in several locations and pry again to fully remove the lens cover.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The old bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Line Up Lens Cover
Push a new number 2825 light bulb straight into the socket.

I recommend testing the new light bulb before you re-install the lens cover.

Move the "Off / Door / On" rocker switch on the overhead console near the map lights in the front of the car to the "On" position to test the new rear dome light bulb.

Testing New Bulb
Line up the lens cover with the overhead light housing.

Gently pop the lens cover back into place.

Move the "Off / Door / On" rocker switch to the "Door" position so that the front and rear dome lights will turn on whenever the driver or passenger doors are opened.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
