This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2016, 2017, 2018 plus the refreshed
2019 & 2020 model years) Hyundai Tucson SUV in changing the
motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the Nu 2.0 liter GDI
inline four cylinder engine. Owners of other Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles such as the Santa Fe, Kona, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, G80, G90, Stinger, Rio, Forte, Optima, Cadenza, K900, Soul, Niro, Sportage, Sorento and Sedona may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mobil 1 M1-104, Bosch 3312, K&N HP-1004, Fram PH9688, Purolator L14459, Wix 51334, Royal Purple 331916, Pennzoil HPZ-37 and Hyundai 26300-35504. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet, a 17mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional), an extension bar, an automotive funnel and 5 quarts of new SAE 5W-20 oil (4.23 U.S. qts total capacity). |

Raise Front of SUV |
Under Engine Cover |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
The first three steps are to warm up the engine
for a few minutes, park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the
ignition. Then engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear wheels to prevent the SUV from moving. Open the hood, twist off the black plastic oil filler cap and partially remove the yellow plastic handled oil level dipstick an inch or two. Removing the oil filler cap and lifting up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. You may be able to squeeze under the SUV with out raising it. I found it easier to raise the vehicle with a floor jack. Raise the front of the SUV with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands. I prefer to just raise the passenger side of the SUV with the scissor jack and place the two jack stands under the frame rail below the front passenger seat. You could instead raise both the driver and passenger side with the floor jack and place a jack stand under both the driver and passenger side frame rails. Another alternative is to drive the vehicle up on to automotive ramps. Attention: If you are using a trolley style floor jack with a pump handle, do not lift the vehicle under the pinch weld since it could bend. Only lift the SUV with a trolley style floor jack under the frame rail. Slide under the engine bay with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Locate the eight bolts on the oil drain pan and oil filter service access panel. |
||
Remove the eight bolts by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Set the 8 bolts aside in a safe place.
Service Access Cover |
Eight 10mm Bolts |
Oil Pan & Oil Filter |
Remove the service access cover and slide it
towards the rear of the vehicle. Once the service access cover is out of the way, you'll be able to see the black metal oil pan and the oil filter. The black metal oil drain bolt is located at the rear edge of the oil pan. |

Oil Drain Bolt - Rear of Pan |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Used Oil Catch Basin |
Attach the 17mm socket to a 3/8" drive ratchet. Slide the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain bolt. Loosen the oil drain plug by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 17mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine in the first step. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. |

|
||
Spin In Oil Drain Bolt |
Tighten Clockwise |
Lisle Oil Filter Wrench |
Inspect the metal
crush washer on the oil drain bolt. If necessary, replace the washer. The OEM oil drain plug washer or "gasket" part number is Hyundai / Kia 21513-23001. Wipe the drain hole with a clean paper towel. Make sure that the old washer is not still attached to the engine. Re-insert the oil drain bolt and spin it in a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the oil drain bolt to just past hand tight or about 25 to 35 lb-ft of torque if you have a torque wrench. The torque specification from the service manual for tightening the 17mm oil drain bolt is 25.3 lb-ft to 32.5 lb-ft (or 34.3 - 44.1 N*m). |
||
Move Oil Catch Container |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Slide the used oil
catch basin to just below the old oil filter. If you have trouble loosening the old oil filter, I highly recommend using the Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. It makes it so much easier to remove stubborn or stuck oil filters that were over tightened. Loosen the old oil filter by turning it in the counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain out of the receptacle for at least a few minutes. Dip your pinky finger into some new SAE 5W-20 oil. |
||
Lubricate Rubber O-Ring |
Twist On New Oil Filter |
Push On Service Panel |
Lubricate the
rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter. Lubricating the o-ring gasket on the new oil filter will help it form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove the old oil filter during the next oil change. Make sure that the rubber o-ring from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine. Twist on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction. Tighten the new oil filter to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Do not over tighten the new oil filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring gasket which could result in an oil leak. Double check that the oil drain bolt and the new oil filter are tight. Raise the service access panel back into place. |
||
Spin In Bolts By Hand |
Tighten Clockwise |
Service Cover Replaced |
Spin in a few of
the 10mm bolts by hand to hold the service access cover in place. Tighten the eight bolts by turning them in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Double check that all eight bolts are tight. |
||
Lower Car From Stands |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New Oil |
Carefully lower the
SUV from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Insert the automotive funnel into the oil filler hole. The total oil capacity for the Nu 2.0L GDI I4 engine for an oil change with a filter replacement is 4.23 U.S. quarts (or 4.0L). (The oil capacity for the 2.4L GDI I4 engine is 5.07 U.S. quarts or 4.8 liters. The capacity of the 1.6 Turbo GDI I4 engine is 4.76 U.S. quarts or 4.5L.) It is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to over fill it. Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may cause sluggish performance and possibly cause damage to seals or gaskets. I recommend only pouring in about 3.75 to 4 US quarts of new oil at first of the 4.23 U.S. quarts total capacity. |

Replace Oil Filler Cap |
Check Dipstick Oil Level |
Engine Oil Change Complete |
Temporarily replace
the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction. Push the oil dipstick handle all the way back in. Start the engine and allow it warm up for a few minutes. Then turn off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain back down to the oil pan for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and then pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches the top of the cross hatched area by the line and the letter "F" that indicates the "Full" or "Maximum" line. You may not need to pour in the entire 4.23 U.S. quarts of oil in order for the level to reach the full line on the dipstick. Replace the dipstick and make sure that the oil filler cap is tight. To reset the oil life maintenance reminder or "service interval", follow these steps. 1. Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. 2. Push the "Menu" button on the right side of the steering wheel located at the top left of the cluster of buttons. 3. Continue pushing the Menu button until you see "User Settings" on the display on the gauge cluster in the dashboard. 4. Use the "Down" arrow key to highlight the service interval. 5. Push and hold the "OK" button for at least five seconds. You can also change the number of miles for the service interval or switch to being reminded in a certain number of months. On some Tucson models, you will see a "Service Required" message on the display. Press and hold the "OK" button for at least 5 seconds until the message disappears. For more,
