This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the S550
sixth generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Ford
Mustang in changing a faulty or failing "IAT" (intake air temperature)
sensor for the EcoBoost 2.3 liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine. The procedure should be the same or very
similar for the 5.0L V8, 5.2L V8 and 3.7L V6 engines. (The 7th generation S650 Ford Mustang is supposed to be released in 2022 as a 2023 model year vehicle.) Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Fusion, Taurus, Escape, EcoSport, Flex, Expedition, Bronco, Ranger, Transit, F-150, C-Max, Fiesta, Focus, Edge, MKZ, Continental, Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The original OEM intake air temperature sensor part number is FoMoCo DS7A-12A697-AA (also known as DS7A 12A697 AA or DS7A12A697AA). A compatible replacement Ford sensor with its part number is Motorcraft DY1267 (also known as DY-1267). A compatible aftermarket IAT sensor is the Standard Ignition AX422. Please verify the part number on the old OEM IAT sensor in your Mustang before purchasing a new one and double check that it is compatible with your dealership. The sensor is also known as the "intercooler charge temperature" sensor or "air charge temperature" (ACT) sensor. If you have a CEL / SES (check engine or service engine soon) light on the gauge cluster use an OBD2 scan tool (also known as an OBDII scanner). Some of the IAT sensor related DTC (diagnostic trouble or "error" codes) you may see include the following: P0110, P0111, P0112, P0113 or P0114. If you would like to try cleaning your old IAT sensor before purchasing a new one, you can use CRC Electronic Cleaner or MAF Cleaner (mass air flow cleaner) is a good second choice. The first few steps are to turn off the ignition, shift the transmission into "Park", engage the emergency / parking brake, open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay. The "IAT" sensor is attached to the front of the plastic air intake tube near the rubber air intake hose attached to the engine air filter element housing. |

Gray Plastic Lock Tab |
Gently Pry Back Tab |
Rotate Counterclockwise |
There is a small light gray plastic locking tab
on the right side of the IAT sensor.
You may need to very gently pry back the gray lock tab to release it. Try to avoid breaking the small plastic tab if you intend on cleaning and re-installing the OEM sensor. Gently rotate the old sensor 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the air intake tube. |

Old Sensor Removed |

Power Plug Detached |
Inspect the old sensor for any soot, sludge, oil
or wear. If you would like to try cleaning the old sensor, it would be best to use CRC Electronic Cleaner since it is the best option for cleaning sensitive electronic components such as the IAT sensor. Allow the sensor to fully air dry before re-installing it. A few of the symptoms of a failing or faulty IAT sensor include difficulty starting the engine, rough idling, stalling, stumbling, knocking (detonation), surging, poor acceleration, reduced fuel economy (lower MPG) and possibly a CEL / SES (check engine / service engine soon) warning light on the gauge cluster. |

Empty Sensor Port |
1/4 Turn Clockwise |
If the old sensor was very dirty, be sure to
also check, clean and possibly replace the engine air filter element. Insert the cleaned or new sensor back into the port (opening) in the air intake pipe. Rotate the sensor 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it in place. You should feel the small gray plastic tab "click" into place. |

Secure Gray Plastic Tab |
Push On Power Plug |
Sensor Change Complete |
Double check that
the new sensor is securely installed. Push the electrical connector straight on to the base of the new sensor until it "clicks" securely into place. If you have an OBDII scanner, clear any IAT related DTC and turn off the ignition. Start the engine and check to see if the diagnostic trouble code re-appears. Take the car for a short and careful test drive to see if the engine functions normally again. Be sure to write down the sensor change in your car's service records. For more,
