Open Driver Side Door
Hood Release Lever
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and perhaps also the revised 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 model years of the Ford Edge SUV in opening the hood or "bonnet" in order to access the engine bay of the EcoBoost 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four cylinder motor in order to check the oil level, fill the windshield washer fluid, replace the air filter or perform other maintenance procedures.

Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Escape, Expedition, EcoSport, Flex, Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus, Ranger, Transit Connect, F-150, Endura, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, MKZ, Navigator, Aviator, Nautilus and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The first two steps are to open the driver side door and locate the hood release lever.

The hood release lever is situated just to the left of the "dead pedal" or "left foot rest" and attached to the black plastic trim piece that covers the opening to the driver side door.

Pull Bottom of Lever
Insert Fingers Under Hood
Firmly pull the bottom of the lever towards yourself.

You will hear a "pop", "clunk" or "thud" sound as the hood latching mechanism is released.

Then insert your fingers in between the hood and the front bumper cover near the middle.

Your fingers should be close to the "Ford" emblem (logo / symbol) at the front of the car.

Yellow Latch Release Lever
Rotate To Left Side
Slide the yellow lever for the hood's secondary safety latch towards the left (passenger) of the car.

Hold the yellow lever in place with one hand.

Lift Open Hood
Demonstrate Releasing Latch
With your other hand, carefully lift the hood up.

Make sure the hood is fully extended.

Do not let go of the hood until you are sure the two struts are supporting it.

Hood Latch Catch Bar
Two Hood Struts
Most Edge models are equipped with two gas charged struts that will support the hood.

If your Edge is not equipped with struts, raise the support bar and insert the anchor at the top into its mounting location opening in the hood.

Yellow Oil Dipstick Handle
To check the oil level in the EcoBoost 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine, locate the yellow plastic dipstick handle near the center of the black plastic engine cover.
Pull Out Dipstick
Checking Oil Level
Pull the dipstick straight out of the engine, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and then pull it out again to check the oil level.

The upper hole in the tip of the metal dipstick indicate the "Full" or "MAX" (Maximum) line.
