This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021) Mitsubishi Outlander SUV in changing a burnt out reverse light bulb in the rear bumper cover. (The reverse light is also known as the "backup" or "back-up" light.)

Owners of other Mitsubishi vehicles such as the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Mirage, Mirage G4, Lancer, ASX, Montero Sport, Pajero, Xpander, Strada and RVR may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 921 (also known as W16W).

If you'd like to have brighter reverse lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some 921 LED (or W16W LED) units.

No tools are required to access and replace the reverse light bulbs.

Please make sure the gear selector is in "Park" and the parking / emergency brake is engaged.

It would also be a good idea to place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving.

Warning: If the SUV has been driven recently, allow the exhaust pipes to cool off for at least an hour or two before continuing with this procedure!

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise
Slide under the rear corner of the vehicle closest to the burnt out reverse light bulb.

Avoid making contact with the exhaust pipes or the muffler just in case they are still hot enough to burn you.

Locate the gray plastic bulb socket on the back side of the reverse light housing.

Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing.

Old Light Bulb Removed
If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it since the bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

If you have trouble removing the old light bulb due to corrosion (rust) or debris such as sand, put on some protective gloves and try gently wiggling it back and forth while pulling it straight out.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) reverse light bulb in this 2020 Outlander SEL was a Toshiba W16W (also known as part number 921).

Push a new number 921 miniature wedge base light bulb straight into the socket.

If you'd like to have brighter reverse lights that will also last much longer before burning out, install some 921 LED units.

Reverse Lights Working
Clean off any oil or grease on the new incandescent light bulb with a microfiber cloth or a paper towel.

If there is any oil or grease on the new bulb, it may create a hot spot and cause the bulb to fail prematurely.

Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it in place.

Double check that the bulb socket is securely locked in the housing.

To test the new reverse light bulbs, have an assistant firmly hold down the brake pedal and shift the transmission into "R" (Reverse).

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some brands of LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your SUV's service records.
