Toyota
Highlander Dome Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out dome / rear
passenger reading light bulb in a 3rd generation 2014 to 2018 Toyota Highlander.
2017 Highlander Dome Light |
3rd Row Passenger Light |
This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 plus
maybe also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Toyota Highlander SUV
in changing a burnt out dome (also known as the rear passenger
reading light) bulb in the overhead housings attached to the
headliner above the second row and third row of seats. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles such as the 4Runner, Avalon, 86, C-HR, Camry, Corolla, iM, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Yaris, FR-S, xB, xD, tC, xA, CT 200h, ES 250, ES 300, ES 330, ES 350, IS 250, IS 350, RX 300, GS 250, NX 300 and RX 350. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 194. For brighter dome lights, install some 194 LED bulbs. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a small plastic pry bar tool. |

Dome / Reading Light |
Insert Screwdriver - Notch |
To prevent from
scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your
screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a small plastic
pry bar tool. There are four "dome" or "rear passenger reading / courtesy" lights inside the Highlander. In this guide, I'm replacing the light bulb in the housing located above the second row of seats on the passenger side of the vehicle. Insert the blade of the screwdriver into the small notch at the top of the lens cover. (The notch is located at the inner edge of the lens cover on the light housings over the 3rd row / cargo area.) |

Pry Out Lens Cover |
Lens Cover Removed |
Gently pry out the
lens cover. Avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily. Set the lens cover aside in a safe place. |
|
Old Light Bulb Exposed |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
If the old light
bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. It might still
be hot enough to burn your fingers. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Push In New Light Bulb |
The OEM light bulb
was marked as Toshiba part number 12V8W U6Y. It can replaced with any miniature wedge base light bulbs such as the number 194, 168, 2825, W5W or a compatible LED. |
|
Lower Tabs In Lower Edge |
Gently Snap In Retaining Clips |
I recommend testing
the new light bulb by pressing the "On / Off" button before replacing the
lens cover. (Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try pulling it out, rotating the electrical contacts 180 degrees and then push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the + positive and - negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.) Lower the two tabs on the bottom edge of the lens cover back into the housing. Gently snap in the two retaining clips on the top edge of the lens cover. |
