This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the eleventh generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018)
Toyota Corolla in changing a dead 12 volt car battery in the engine
bay. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM battery in this 2014 Corolla was a "Group Size" 35 from Johnson Controls and it was part number 55D23L. A few other compatible Group Size 35 12V batteries with their part numbers are as follows: Optima 8020-164 35 RedTop, EverStart MAXX-35N, Bosch H6-760B, AutoCraft Gold 35-2, Optima RedTop 35 and NAPA BAT 8435. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or a 10mm wrench. |

Cover & Tuck Away |
Loosen 10mm Nut |
"J" Hook Bar Attached |
The first two steps
are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine
bay. The 12 volt car battery is located right behind the driver side headlight assembly and in front of the engine air filter box. Loosen the nut on the negative "-" terminal by turning it counterclockwise with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench. Cover the negative terminal in a small towel and tuck it away on the side of the battery to help prevent accidental electrical contact. Loosen the rear nut on the battery clamp or "hold down bar" by turning it counterclockwise a few turns with a 10mm socket and ratcheting wrench. You can leave the rear nut attached to the top of the "J" hook bar. Fortunately, Toyota designed the "J" hook bar with a plastic bracket that keeps it attached to the battery tray. |

Loosen Front 10mm Bolt |
10mm Bolt Removed |
Pull Off Battery Clamp Bar |
Then remove the
10mm bolt at the front of the battery hold down bar by turning it
counterclockwise. Set the 10mm bolt aside in a safe place. Lift the battery clamp off the top of the battery and carefully rotate it around towards the back of the engine bay until is entirely clear of the old battery. |
||
Rotate Battery Clamp |
Pull Off Plastic Red Cover |
Loosen Positive Terminal |
Lift the red
plastic cover off the positive battery terminal. Loosen the 10mm terminal nut by turning it counterclockwise a few turns. |
||
|
||
Pull Off "+" Terminal |
Lift Out Old 12 V Battery |
Clean Off Battery Tray |
Pull the positive
terminal straight off the "+" battery post. Close the red plastic cover over the terminal and tuck it away on the left side of the battery. Carefully lift the old battery out of the engine bay and gently set it on the ground. Try to avoid tipping over or dropping the old battery to prevent from having battery acid leak out. Be sure to take the old battery with you to Walmart or the auto parts store to avoid having to pay a "core" charge. The retailer will also have the old battery properly recycled. Clean off any debris from the plastic battery tray so that the new battery will rest evenly on it. |

Lower In New Battery |
Push On "+" Terminal |
Lower the new 12
volt battery down in to the engine bay with the "+" positive terminal on the
left (passenger) side and the "-" negative terminal on the right (driver)
side. If you've had a problem with corrosion (white or blue powder) building up on the battery terminals, consider installing some felt anti-corrosion washers to the battery posts. Push the positive terminal on to the "+" battery post. |
||
Tighten 10mm Clockwise |
Push On Red Plastic Cover |
Hold Down Bar Replaced |
Tighten the 10mm
positive terminal nut in the clockwise direction until it is snug. Try to avoid over tightening the terminal nut to prevent from damaging the battery post. Flip the red plastic cover closed over the positive terminal. Swing the battery hold down bar over the top of the new battery. |
||
Spin In 10mm Bolt |
Tighten Clockwise |
Tighten Rear 10mm Nut |
Spin in the 10mm bolt at the
front of the battery hold down clamp. Tighten the front 10mm bolt in the clockwise direction. Then tighten the 10mm nut at the top of the "J" hook bar on the rear of the hold down clamp in the clockwise direction. |
||
Push On Negative Terminal |
Tighten 10mm Terminal Nut |
New 12V Battery Installed |
Push the negative
terminal on to the "-" battery post. Tighten the 10mm negative terminal nut in the clockwise direction until it is snug. Test the new 12 volt car battery by starting the engine and turning on the headlights. Be sure to adjust the time on the clock and program your favorite radio station presets before you start driving. For more, check out my other
