This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Nissan Versa sedan in changing a burnt out brake, rear turn signal and reverse bulb in the tail light housings.

Owners of other Nissan vehicle such as the Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue,  Note, Leaf, Juke, Kicks, Latio, Almera, Sunny, Qashqai, NV200, Pathfinder, Frontier and X-Trail may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake # P21/5W (also known as 7528), Rear Turn Signal # PY21W (also known as 7507) and Reverse Light # P21W (also known as part number 7506).

If you would like to have brighter tail lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some P21/5W LED, PY21W LED and P21W LED bulbs.

The tools needed to remove the tail light housing and access the bulbs include a small flat head screwdriver, a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and a small Phillips head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to open the trunk lid and move to the side of the vehicle with the burnt out light bulb.

There are three round black plastic pop rivet fasteners that have to be removed before you can access the rear of the tail light housing.

Use the flat head screwdriver to gently pry out the small round "button" in the center of the pop rivet to unlock the fastener.

Remove Third Pop Rivet
Once the smaller round button in the pop rivet is in the out and released position, pry out the base of the fastener.

Repeat the process to remove the other two pop rivet fasteners located near the tail light housing.

Set the three pop rivets aside in a safe place.

Loosen Inner Nut
Use a plastic pry bar tool to gently pull back the carpeted trunk liner panel away from the rear of the tail light housing.

There are two small black metal nuts that secure the tail light housing to the rear corner of the vehicle.

Loosen the inner nut (located closer to the center of the trunk) by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Loosen the outer nut (located closer to the outside of the vehicle) by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Carefully spin off the two nuts the last few turns with your fingers to help prevent them from falling down and becoming lost in the cargo area.

Set the two nuts aside with the three black plastic pop rivet fasteners.

Please proceed with caution and at your own risk!

Warning - The tail light housing is still held in place by a plastic slot attached to a plastic button head and also a metal spike inserted into a plastic grommet.

Do NOT pull the tail light housing back away from the rear of the vehicle.

Pull Off Tail Light Housing
The two sets of friction fasteners are mounted in the left to right orientation.

If you try to pull the tail light housing straight out from the rear of the vehicle, you will not be able to remove it.

Gently and carefully pull the tail light housing out away from the side of the vehicle.

For the passenger side tail light housing shown in these pictures, you would pull the tail light housing out to the right away from the cargo area.

Please take a look at the pictures on this page before attempting to remove the tail light housing so that you don't accidentally crack the lens.

If necessary, you can very carefully and gently use a plastic pry bar tool to loosen the friction fasteners on the front outer edge of the light housing.

Do NOT use excessive force to prevent from cracking the plastic!

If the friction fasteners are very tight, you can try gently wiggling and rocking the light housing to loosen them.

Another option is to use a rubber mallet to gently tap on the threaded bars inside the cargo area to loosen the tail light housing.

Once the light housing has been detached from the vehicle, turn it over to access the back side.

I recommend placing a micro fiber towel on the bumper cover to help prevent from scratching the tail light lens cover or the painted surfaces.

The bulb holder or "bracket" is attached to the back side of the tail light housing with four small Phillips head screws.

Loosen the screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with a small Phillips head screwdriver.

Have an assistant hold the tail light housing or support it with one hand while you loosen the final screw to prevent it from falling down on to the ground.

Push down the old light bulb into the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out.

Push in a new number P21/5W (dual filament) brake and parking light bulb down into the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place.

If you would like to have brighter brake and parking lights, install some compatible replacement P21/5W LED bulbs.

The rear turn signal light bulb (A.K.A. the indicator or "blinker") light bulb is situated in the center of the tail light housing and the bulb bracket.

Push the bayonet style rear turn signal light bulb down into the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out.

Push a new number PY21W amber colored light bulb down into the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place.

If you'd like to have brighter rear turn signals, install some compatible replacement PY21W LED bulbs.

Replace Four Screws
Clean off any grease or dirt from the new bulbs by wiping them with a micro fiber cloth or a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol.

If there is any oil on the new bulbs, it may create a hot spot and cause them to burn out prematurely.

Lower the bulb holder bracket down on to the back side of the tail light housing.

Replace the four screws and tighten them in the clockwise direction with a small Phillips head screwdriver until they are snug.

If you installed LED bulbs, I recommend testing them before re-attaching the tail light housing.

To test the new light bulbs, have an assistant turn on the parking lights, step on the brake pedal, activate the hazard signals and shift the transmission into reverse.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some brands of LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.
