This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Nissan Versa
sedan in taking off the plastic interior door panels in order to upgrade the
OEM speakers, add soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or
replace a broken power window motor. Owners of other Nissan vehicle such as the Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, Note, Leaf, Juke, Kicks, Latio, Almera, Sunny, Qashqai, NV200, Pathfinder, Frontier and X-Trail may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to take off the door panel include a plastic pry bar tool, a flat head screwdriver, a Torx T20 star bit screwdriver, a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a large Phillips head screwdriver. The OEM front door speaker can be removed with a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver. The first two steps are to fully lower the power window and open the door. Locate the small triangular shaped "sail" panel situated at the top inner corner of the door panel near the side view mirror. Use the plastic pry bar tool to gently pull the sail panel off the door frame. Try to avoid using excessive force. The sail panel should pop off relatively easily. On some Nissan models, the sail panel may contain a tweeter speaker that will have to be disconnected. Set the sail panel aside in a safe place. |

Pry Out Rubber Cover |
Screw Cover Removed |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Next, use the flat
head screwdriver to carefully pry out the rubber cover located at the bottom
of the well for the door pull handle in the center of the armrest. Remove the screw at the bottom of the well by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the Torx T-20 star bit screwdriver. |
||
Remove Well Screw |
Pry Out Switch Panel |
Gently Release Clips |
You may need to use
a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the screw out of the bottom of the well
in the door pull handle. Set the small black metal screw aside in a safe place. Insert the plastic pry bar tool in between the switch panel and the armrest. Gently pry up the switch panel to release the friction fasteners. You may need to remove and re-insert the pry bar tool in several locations to fully release all of the clips. |

Switch Panel Removed |
Disconnect Power Plug |
Plug Release Button |
Lift the switch
panel off the armrest and turn it over to access the electrical connector.
Push in the release button on the white plastic electrical connector before sliding it straight out of its socket. |

Armrest Bolt Exposed |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Remove Armrest Bolt |
Once the switch
panel has been removed, you'll be able to see the black metal bolt just in
front of the armrest. Loosen the bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. You could instead use a Phillips head screwdriver. |

Trim Pieces & Fasteners |
Pull Out Bottom Edge |
Detach Plastic Pop Rivets |
Set the bolt aside
with the other fastener. At this point, you should have removed the sail panel, the rubber well cover, the switch panel, the small Torx T20 screw and the longer 10mm bolt. Insert the plastic pry bar tool in between the bottom edge of the door panel and the metal door frame. Firmly pull out the bottom edge of the door panel to release the pop rivet friction fasteners. Continue pulling out the pop rivets all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel. |
||
Lift Door Panel Off Frame |
Electrical Connector |
Door Panel Removed |
Carefully lift the
plastic door panel up and off the lip at the top of the metal door frame. Make sure you pass the electrical connector and wire loom out through the back of the door panel. Set the plastic door panel aside in a safe place. |
||
Metal Door Frame |
OEM Door Speaker |
Hold Panel Near Frame |
The OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) front door speaker is located at the front bottom
corner of the metal door frame. To remove the speaker, disconnect the electrical connector and loosen the three screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver. The OEM front door speakers can be replaced with aftermarket car speakers in the following sizes: 6 1/2" and 6 3/4". (You may need to use a mounting bracket or an electrical connector adapter depending on which speakers you choose.) I highly recommend applying some sound deadener to the metal door frame and the back side of the plastic door panel to help stop vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume. To replace the plastic door panel, hold it near the metal door frame and tilt the top edge towards yourself. |
||
Lower Panel On Frame |
Line Up Pop Rivets |
Firmly Tap In Fasteners |
Carefully lower the
top edge of the plastic door panel on to the upper metal lip on the door
frame. Make sure the top of the door panel is fully seated on the top of the door frame. Line up the white plastic pop rivet friction fasteners with their corresponding holes in the metal door frame. Firmly tap in the pop rivets all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel. |
||
Replace Armrest Screw |
Line Up Switch Panel |
Push In Power Plug |
Spin in the large
black metal bolt into the hole just in front of the armrest a few turns by
hand to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the bolt by turning it in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until it is snug. Slide the electrical connector into it socket on the underside of the switch panel. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. |
||
Line Up Retaining Clips |
Switch Panel Secured |
Door Pull Handle Well |
Line up the
retaining clips on the underside of the switch panel with the slots on the
door panel. Push down on the switch panel to secure it into place. Replace the screw at the bottom of the well by turning it in the clockwise direction with the Torx T20 screwdriver until it is snug. |
||
Lower In Rubber Cover |
Push On Sail Panel |
Door Panel Replaced |
Lower the small
rubber trim cover into the well in the door pull handle. Push the sail panel back into place. (If your vehicle is equipped with a tweeter speaker in the sail panel, be sure to push the power plug back into its socket.) Sit inside the car and make sure the door opener handle, power door lock switch, power window switch and speaker are all working properly. Don't forget to write down the procedure in your vehicle's service records. Please
