This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Toyota 4Runner SUV in changing the rear window wiper blade.

Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM rear window wiper blade assembly part number is Genuine Toyota 85242-35050 (A.K.A. 8524235050).

If you would rather just buy the rubber blade refill, the part number is Toyota 85214-42040 (A.K.A. 8521442040).

A few other aftermarket rear wiper blades that are compatible (but may require use of an adapter piece) include the following: Anco AR-12A, Michelin 9512 and Denso 160-5512.

No tools are needed to access and replace the wiper blade.

Towel - Protect Glass
The first step is to turn on the ignition, but do not start the vehicle.

Then turn on the rear window wiper and quickly turn off the ignition when the wiper arm is pointing straight down.

Move to the back window and gently lift the wiper arm off the glass.

Rotate the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm until it is almost perpendicular (90 degree angle) to the wiper arm.

Continue gently rotating the old wiper blade until you can pop the plastic mounting bar in the center of the wiper blade out of the "C" shaped socket at the end of the wiper arm.

Place a small towel on the back windshield to protect it from being scratched, chipped, cracked or shattered just in case the wiper arm smack down on to it while you are changing the blade.

Perpendicular To Arm
I would recommend that you buy the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts such as the Toyota 85214-42040 rubber blade refill by itself or the entire rear wiper blade assembly which is Toyota 85242-35050.

If you purchased the rubber refill, slide the old rubber blade out of the old wiper assembly and slide in the new rubber blade.

Line up the new wiper blade assembly at almost a 90 degree angle with the wiper arm. The rubber blade should be pointing away from the SUV.

Insert the plastic mounting bar at the center of the new wiper blade in to the "C" shaped socket.

Return Wiper To Top
Gently push the mounting bar in to the "C" shaped socket and rotate the new wiper blade until it is parallel with the wiper arm.

Lower the wiper arm down to the back window.

Turn on the ignition and allow the rear wiper arm to return to its resting position under the trim cover above the tailgate door that contains the LED high mount 3rd brake light.

For the best wiper performance, I'd recommend thoroughly cleaning off the back window and applying a glass treatment product such as Rain-X.
