This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the fifth generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 &
2016) Toyota 4Runner SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light
bulb in the tailgate door. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The replacement light bulb is part number 2825 or W5W which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA and Eiko. You could also install a brighter compatible replacement 2825 LED bulb. The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulbs is a Phillips head screwdriver. |

Loosen Counterclockwise |
Remove 2nd Screw |
Remove the two
screws that secure the license plate light housing lens cover in place by
turning them counterclockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. |

Remove Lens Cover |
Pull out the lens cover and set it aside in a safe place. | |
Bulb Housing & Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
If the old bulb was
recently illuminated, be careful when you remove it since it might still be
hot enough to burn your fingers. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Old # 2825 or W5W |
Push In New 2825 Bulb |
Push a new number
2825 or W5W bulb straight in to
the socket. If necessary, you may also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # 158, 168, 194 or a compatible LED unit. |

Line Up Lens Cover |
Lens Cover Replaced |
Line up the two
plastic pegs on the lens cover with their corresponding holes in the light
housing. Push the lens cover back in to place. |

Re-Insert Two Screws |
Tighten Phillips Clockwise |
Re-insert the two screws and tighten them in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver. | |
Lens Cover Secured |
Test License Plate Lights |
Test the new
license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights or by pressing the
"Unlock" button on the key fob. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
