This automotive maintenance "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 7th generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012) General Motors Chevrolet Malibu in replacing a burnt out overhead map light bulb.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles such as the Cruze, Sonic, Volt, Impala, Corvette, Camaro, Tahoe, Colorado, Equinox, Traverse, Buick Regal, Enclave, LaCrosse, GMC Acadia, Terrain, Yukon, Cadillac CTS, ATS, XTS, Escalade, Pontiac Grand Prix, G6, G5, G8, Oldsmobile Alero, Silhouette, Bravada, Aurora, and Intrigue may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement map light bulb is part # 2825, 168 or W5W from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE and ACDelco.

If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to replace the bulb is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry out the translucent lens cover.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth, or instead use a small plastic pry trim panel removal tool.

Insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver in between the map light bulb lens cover and the overhead console. Gently pry out the lens cover and put it aside in a safe place.

Grab the old map bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it out of the socket. I had trouble gripping the bulb with my bare fingers so I put on a nitrile rubber glove.

Insert Plastic Tab First
Push in a new # 2825, 168 or "W5W" 5 watt wedge base bulb into the socket.

I recommend buying the Sylvania 168LL long life light bulb or the even longer lasting 2825 LED bulbs.

Test the new bulb by pressing the white plastic on/off switch.

Line up the translucent lens cover and insert the plastic tab facing the rear of the vehicle. Then gently snap the lens cover back in place.
