This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth generation "B16" (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012) Nissan Sentra sedan in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the trunk lid.

Owners of other Nissan sedan or coupe vehicles with similar license plate light bulb housings such as the Versa, Altima, Maxima, and 370Z may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 168 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA and EIKO.

If necessary, you may also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # 2825, W5W, 194 or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to access the bulbs is a flathead screwdriver.

Pry Up Center of Fastener
Pull Out Plastic Pop Rivet
Trunk Lid Carpet Fasteners
The first step is to open the trunk lid.

Then gently pry out the center piece of each black plastic pop rivet with the flathead screwdriver before pulling out the entire fastener.

6 Pop Rivets Removed
Pull Back Trunk Lid Liner
License Plate Bulb Socket
I removed six of the plastic fasteners to access either of the two license plate light bulb socket.

You might choose to remove more of the trunk lid liner fasteners or less depending on your preference.

Gently pull back the carpeted trunk lid liner and locate the light grey bulb socket.

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise
Pull Out Bulb Socket
Pull Out Old Bulb
Reach in and rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing.

Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

Push In New # 168 Bulb
1/4 Turn Clockwise Lock
Bulb Socket Secured

Push a new # 168 bulb straight in to the socket.

If necessary, you can also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # W5W, 2825, 194 or a brighter LED unit.

Re-insert the socket in to the trunk lid and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to lock it in place.

Replace Trunk Carpet Liner
Push In Plastic Fastener
Pop In Center Piece
Push the trunk lid cover back in to place.

Line up the holes in the carpeted liner with the holes in the metal trunk lid.

Make sure that the center pieces of each fastener is in the up position before trying to re-install them.

Replace All Fasteners
Trunk Carpet Replaced
Test New Light Bulb
Push in the larger outer piece of the fastener in to the hole first and then gently pop in the center piece to secure it in place.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
