These pictures are from a trip to the Fort Lauderdale Beach on a very hot day in late July of 2007. Even with the temperature in the high 90's, the beach was covered in sunbathers, sports enthusiasts and picnicking families.

The Greater Ft Lauderdale area was awarded the "Blue Wave Beaches" certification and has over 20 miles of pristine sand.

As we strolled down the boardwalk I noticed the huge variety of activities or amenities that you could enjoy in the area including basketball courts, outdoor bbq grills, picnic areas, volleyball nets, personal watercraft rentals, rollerblading, people watching, the canine beach, the aquatic complex and of course sunbathing.

After braving the scorching hot sand, we finally found my friends from Gainesville who were competing in the Dig The Beach Volleyball Tournament.

The after party for the volleyball tournament was being held at a bar named Lulu's Bait Shack on A1A. Some of the other fun nightlife hot spots in the area include the Elbo Room, Tarpon Bend, Capone's, the Beach Bar Grill, Automatic Slims, Cafe Iguana, Blue Bikini, Beach Bums, Voodoo Lounge, and Dicey Riley's. But you don't have to wait for the sun to set, there's a good time to be had in Fort Lauderdale every day all day.

Not too far away you can also find beaches in Hollywood, Pompano, Deerfield and the city of Dania. If the daily afternoon thunder showers chase you away from the sand you can always go shopping at the Broward Mall, Sawgrass Mills, the Festival Flea Market, the Swap Shop, The Galleria, or the Las Olas Riverfront.
