This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Ford
EcoSport compact SUV in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter
on the EcoBoost
turbocharged 1.0 liter inline three cylinder engine. (The
procedure should be similar for the 2.0L I4 and 1.5L
I3 engines.) Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicles such as the Fiesta, B-Max, Escape, Edge, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Expedition, Transit, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Puma, Kuga, Endura, Everest, Ka, Figo, Endeavour, Aviator, Corsair, Nautilus and Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers include the following: Motorcraft FL-910S, Purolator PL10241, Royal Purple 341777, Denso 150-2010 and Mobil 1 M1-102. The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack with two jack stands or a pair of automotive ramps, a used oil catch container, a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional) and an automotive funnel. The oil capacity specification for the EcoBoost 1.0L I3 engine in this 2020 EcoSport for an oil change with a filter replacement is 4.4 U.S. quarts (1.1 gallon or 4.3 liters) of new SAE 5W-20 oil. Please check your owner's manual for the correct oil capacity specification and viscosity (oil weight) recommendation for your SUV. They may vary depending on the model year, trim level, transmission type and your region of the world. The first steps are to drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the transmission into "Park" and turn off the ignition. Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the car from moving. It would be best to perform the oil change after the vehicle was recently driven when the engine is still warm to help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also to allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. Open the hood, partially remove the dipstick handle an inch or two and twist off the oil fill cap in the counterclockwise direction. |

Twist Off Oil Fill Cap |
Silver Metal Oil Pan |
Rear of Oil Pan |
Set the
oil filler cap aside in a safe place. Partially pulling out the dipstick and removing the oil fill cap will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. Carefully raise the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands positioned under the frame rails. I just raised the front passenger side of the vehicle for quick and easy access to the oil pan, drain bolt and oil filter. Please do not solely rely on the floor jack to support the vehicle! Slide under the front passenger side of the engine bay. Locate the silver metal oil pan. |

Oil Drain Bolt - Rear |
Oil Filter Above Drain Bolt |
Used Oil Catch Basin |
The silver metal
oil drain bolt is located at the bottom of the rear edge of the oil pan. If you look straight up from the drain bolt, you'll see the oil filter situated just above the CV axle. Position the used oil catch basin to just below the drain bolt. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Drain Out Old Oil |
Spin In Oil Drain Bolt |
Carefully loosen
the drain bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 13mm
socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt since the old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. Inspect the old oil drain plug. If the washer (or "gasket") is damaged, replace it with a new one. If the drain plug itself appears damaged, replace it with a new one. A compatible replacement aftermarket oil drain plug is the Votex DP001. Clean off the area around the drain hole with a clean paper towel or a rag. Make sure the old washer is not still attached to the engine. Spin in the drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. |
||
Tighten Oil Drain Bolt |
Lisle Oil Filter Wrench |
Loosen Old Oil Filter |
Tighten the oil
drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 13mm socket and a 3/8" drive
ratchet until it is snug. If you have a reliable and accurate torque wrench, the service manual specification for tightening the oil drain bolt on the EcoBoost 1.0L I3 engine is 21 lb-ft (or 28 Nm). Slide the used oil catch basin to just below the old oil filter. Spin off the old oil filter by twisting it in the counterclockwise direction. I highly recommend using an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600. It makes removing stubborn, stuck and overtightened oil filters much easier to remove. Attach the oil filter wrench to a short extension bar and the 3/8" drive ratchet. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Drain Old Oil From Filter |
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Carefully spin the
old oil filter in the counterclockwise direction until the old oil starts to
drip out. Allow the old oil to slowly drip out for a minute or two before fully removing the oil filter to prevent from making a mess. Completely spin off the old filter, drain out the old oil into the basin and discard it. Dip your pinky finger into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter. |
||
Lubricate Rubber O-Ring |
Spin On New Oil Filter |
Tighten Oil Drain Bolt |
Lubricating the
rubber o-ring will help prevent oil leaks, allow the gasket to form a better
seal and also make it easier to remove the filter during the next oil
change. Make sure the old rubber gasket is not still attached to the engine. Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until it is snug. Continue tightening the new oil filter to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Try to avoid over tightening the new filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring which could result in an oil leak. (I've never used a torque wrench to tighten a new oil filter, but the shop manual torque specification for tightening the new oil filter is about 11 lb-ft or 14.5 Nm.) Double check that the drain bolt and the new oil filter are tight before moving on to the next steps. |

Lower SUV From Stands |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New Oil |
Carefully lower the
SUV from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill port. The oil capacity specification in the 2020 EcoSport owner's manual for the EcoBoost 1.0L turbo I3 engine for an oil change with a filter replacement is 4.4 U.S. quarts (1.1 U.S. gallon or 4.3 Liters). The owner's manual recommends using SAE 5W-20 oil weight (viscosity) for most climates. Please check the owner's manual for your SUV to verify the correct oil capacity specification and oil weight recommendation for your climate. It is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to overfill it. Running an engine that has been overfilled may cause damage to seals, gaskets or other components. I recommend at first only pouring in about 4 U.S. quarts (or 4 liters) of new oil to help ensure the engine is not overfilled. Temporarily replace the oil fill cap and push the dipstick down into place. Start the engine and allow it warm up for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. Turn off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain back down to the oil pan for at least 15 minutes for the most accurate dipstick reading. |
||
Check Dipstick Oil Level |
Replace Oil Fill Cap |
Push Down Dipstick |
Pull out the
dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it back into the
engine and pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more new oil up to the 4.4 U.S. quarts total capacity specification and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick. You may not need to pour in the entire 4.4 U.S. quarts for the oil level to reach the upper notch on the dipstick which indicates the "MAX" (maximum) level. Once the oil level is correct, fully re-insert the dipstick and make sure the oil fill cap is tight. Be sure to write down the oil change and filter replacement in your vehicle's service records. The EcoSport is equipped with an "Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor" system that will indicate when an oil change is required. The service interval could be anywhere from about 3,500 miles for extreme duty such as towing in the mountains to about 12,500 miles for mostly highway driving on flat roads. To reset the oil change indicator, follow these steps: 1. Switch the ignition to the "ON" (accessory) position but do not start the engine. 2. Fully press down the accelerator (gas) pedal and the brake pedal at the same time. 3. Keep the accelerator and brake pedals fully pressed down at the same time. 4. After about three seconds, you will see a message confirming that the reset procedure is in progress. 5. After about 25 seconds, a message will appear confirming that the rest has been completed. It would be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for drops of fresh oil during the next few days which might indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the new oil filter. I also recommend checking the oil level on the dipstick after a few days and at least once a month to monitor any oil consumption (oil being burned). For more,
