This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in changing the front windshield window wiper blades. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturers) wiper blade sizes for the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Compass models in inches are as follows: Driver Side 24" and Passenger Side 18". (Note - The earlier 2017 and 2018 model years may be equipped with these different sized wipers: Driver Side 22" and Passenger Side 20".) Please use the Amazon Part Finder website to verify the correct wiper blade sizes for your vehicle before making a purchase. A few compatible replacement wiper blades with their part numbers include the following: Rain-X 5079280-2 & Rain-X 5079275-2, Bosch 24CA & Bosch 18CA, Michelin 8524 & Michelin 8518, AmazonBasics 24" & 18", Aero 24" & 18" and Trico 25-240 & Trico 25-180. The tools needed to remove and replace the wiper blades include a plastic pry bar tool and possibly also a flat head screwdriver. The first step is to lift the wiper arm off the windshield until it remains in the raised position by itself. Locate the rectangular shaped black plastic locking tab in the center of the old wiper blade. |

Locking Tab Released |
Use the plastic pry
bar tool or a flat head screwdriver to pry out the bottom edge of the
locking tab. Swing the locking tab up and away from the metal wiper arm. |
||
Rotate Away Wiper Blade |
Push In Release Tab |
Slide Old Blade Down |
Slightly rotate the
old wiper blade away from the wiper arm. Locate the small black plastic release tab situated in between the wiper blade and the wiper arm. Push in the release tab to unlock the mounting bracket. Pull the old wiper blade down to detach the mounting bracket from the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. |
||
Rotate Blade Perpendicular |
Lift Blade Off Wiper Arm |
Old Blade Detached |
Rotate the old
wiper blade until it is just about perpendicular (at a 90 degree angle) with
the wiper arm. Pull the old wiper blade off the end of the wiper arm. |

Towel - Protect Glass |
Plastic Mounting Bracket |
Line Up New Wiper Blade |
Place a large towel
on the windshield to help protect the glass from being chipped, cracked,
shattered or scratched just in case the metal wiper arm smacks down on to
the window while you are replacing the wiper blade. Line up the new wiper blade with the wiper arm as shown in the picture above. The locking tab should be closer to the left side of the vehicle and the plastic mounting bracket should be closer to the right side of the vehicle. |
||
Pass Hook Through Center |
Rotate Blade Parallel |
Pull Mount Into Hook |
Lower the opening
in the center of the new wiper blade over the metal hook at the end of the
wiper arm. Rotate the new wiper blade until it is just about parallel with the wiper arm. Slide the new wiper blade up to secure the plastic mounting bracket into the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. You should feel or hear the mounting bracket "click" securely into the metal hook. Double check to make sure the new wiper blade is securely attached. |
||
Swing Down Locking Tab |
Lower Blade To Window |
New Wiper Blade Installed |
Swing the plastic
lock tab down and push on it until it "clicks" securely into place. Carefully lower the wiper arm back down to the windshield. For the best wiper performance, I recommend thoroughly cleaning off the windshield and applying a window treatment product such as Rain-X which will help actively repel water from the glass. Be sure to write down the blade change in your SUV's service records. Please
