This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and probably also the upcoming 2021 model year) Hyundai Elantra sedan in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console or upgrading both bulbs to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Hyundai, Genesis or Kia vehicles such as the Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Kona, Nexo, Venue, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, G70, G80, G90, Soul, Sportage, Niro, Sorento, Telluride, Rio, Forte, Optima, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sedona and Seltos may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number is W10W (or KHA12V10W).

You may also use any other miniature wedge base light bulbs such as the 2825 (or W5W, 168 or 194).

If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulbs is a small flat head screwdriver or a small plastic pry bar tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic trim removal tool.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver in between the inner edge of the lens cover and the overhead console.

Gently pry out the lens cover to release the two "C" or "U" shaped plastic retaining clips from their mounting pegs.

Do NOT pry along the outer edge of the lens cover to avoid breaking the plastic tabs.

Old Light Bulb Exposed
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light was recently turned on, allow it to cool off for a few minutes. Be careful when you remove the bulb, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

KHA12V10W W10W
Grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

The original bulb in this 2018 Elantra was part number KHA12V10W W10W.

I found it difficult to find the KHA12V10W or a W10W bulb in stores or online, so I recommend buying a brighter LED miniature wedge base unit such as the 2825 LED.

You could also use any other miniature wedge base light bulbs such as the W5W, 168, 194 or 2825 but they will be dimmer than the larger OEM 10 watt bulb.

To test the new light bulb, press the clear plastic "On / Off" button.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try pulling it out of the socket, rotating it 180 degrees and pushing it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Line up the lens cover with the opening in the overhead console.

First, re-insert the two tabs on the outer edge of the lens cover into the light housing.
