This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016)
Toyota Yaris in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter
on the 1NZ-FE 1.5 liter VVT-i inline four cylinder motor. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Corolla, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers include the following: Fram PH4967, Toyota 90915-YZZF2, Mobil 1 M1-103, Wix 51394, Bosch 3311, Purolator L14476, Royal Purple 10-2840 and ACDelco PF1233. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch container, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench, an automotive funnel and 4 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil. |

Lift Up Dipstick Handle |
Raise Front of Car |
Black Metal Oil Pan |
The first steps are
to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the car on a level surface and
then turn off the ignition. Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly. Engage the emergency / parking brake and turn off the ignition. Place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to prevent the car from moving. Open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and pull up the yellow plastic handled dipstick an inch or two. Removing the oil filler cap and lifting up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. Raise the front of the car with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands. Slide under the front passenger side of the engine bay with the 14mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench and the used oil catch container. |

Silver Metal Drain Bolt |
Filter - In Front of Oil Pan |
Used Oil Catch Basin |
The black metal oil
pan is located closer to the passenger side of the car. The silver metal oil drain bolt is situated on the left (passenger) side of the oil pan. Slide the used oil catch container to just below the drain bolt. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Drain Out Old Oil |
Replace 14mm Drain Bolt |
Loosen the oil
drain bolt in the counterclockwise direction with the 14mm socket and a 3/8"
drive ratcheting wrench. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. If the drain bolt is equipped with a crush washer, inspect it and replace it if necessary. A replacement OEM oil drain plug gasket is part number Toyota 90430-12031. Re-insert the drain bolt and spin it in a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the oil drain bolt with the 14mm socket and the 3/8" drive ratchet to just past hand tight or about 28 lb-ft of torque. |

Lisle Oil Filter Wrench |
Slide Basin Forward |
Loosen Old Oil Filter |
The oil filter is
located just in front of the oil pan and closer to the center line of the
car. I recommend using an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600 for easy removal of the old filter. Attach the filter wrench to a short extension bar and the 3/8" drive ratchet. Move the used oil catch container forward to just below the oil filter. Loosen the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise with the wrench. |
||
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Lubricate Rubber O-Ring |
Spin On New Oil Filter |
Allow the old oil
to drain out from the filter receptacle for at least a minute or two. Dip your pinky finger in to some new SAE 5W-30 oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter. Lubricating the rubber o-ring will allow it to form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove the during the next oil change. Make sure that the rubber o-ring from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine. Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until it makes contact with the engine. Then continue tightening it another 3/4 of a turn or about 9.5 lb-ft of torque. Try to avoid over tightening the new oil filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring or the filter housing. Double check that the oil drain bolt and new oil filter are tight before moving on to the next steps. |
||
Lower Car From Stands |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New 5W-30 Oil |
Carefully lower the
vehicle from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole. The 1NZ-FE 1.5L VVT-i I4 engine's total capacity for an oil change with a filter replacement is 3.9 U.S. quarts (or 3.7 liters) of SAE 5W-30. It is far better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to over fill it. Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may cause damage to seals, gaskets or other components and also lead to sluggish performance. I recommend only pouring in about 3.5 U.S. quarts of oil at first. |
||
Replace Oil Filler Cap |
Check Dipstick Oil Level |
Replace Dipstick |
Then temporarily
replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction and
push down the oil dipstick. Start the engine and allow it to warm up for a few minutes. Allow the new oil to drain down to the oil pan for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel or a rag, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper metal dot near the end of the dipstick which indicates the "Full" or "Maximum" line. Once the oil level is correct, re-insert the dipstick and tighten the oil filler cap in the clockwise direction until it is snug. To reset the "MAINT REQD" (maintenance required) light, follow these steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position. 2. Switch the LCD display to the Trip Meter A screen. 3. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF / Lock" position. 4. Press and hold the display change button. 4. Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position but do not start the engine. 5. Continue holding the display change button until the screen displays "000000". The "MAINT REQD" message should now be gone. Be sure to record the oil change in your vehicle's service records.
