How to change the rear disc brake pads on a 2nd generation 2014 to 2021 Nissan Qashqai or Rogue Sport SUV.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) in changing the rear disc brake pads and lubricating the caliper slider pins. Plus instructions for changing the rear rotors if necessary.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement sets of new rear brake pads with their part numbers are as follows: Power Stop 16-1393, Wagner ZD1393, DuraGo BP905 MS, Centric 103.09050 and ACDelco Gold 17D905CH.

The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include the following: a lug nut wrench, a floor jack, two jack stands, a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, an "F" clamp and a tube of brake caliper grease.

Attention: If your Qashqai or Rogue Sport is equipped with the EPB ("electric" or "electronic" parking brake) system, you will either need an OBD2 scanner with the ability to place the EPB into service / maintenance mode or you'll need to manually retract the parking brake actuator before compressing the piston. Please take a look at my EPB Retraction Guide for some general information about this procedure. I'll include some Qashqai and Rogue Sport specific instructions for manually turning back the EPB actuator further down the page.

Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

The first few steps are to drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the transmission into "Park" and turn off the ignition.

Make sure the emergency / parking brake is NOT engaged. If the parking brake is set, you will not be able to pull the rear caliper off the old pads and out of the bracket.

Securely place wheel chocks on both sides of the front tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving.

Gently and carefully pull the plastic wheel cover or "hub cap" off the rear wheel. Set the cover aside in a safe place.

Spin Off Five Lug Nuts
Slightly loosen the five lug nuts on the rear wheel by turning them about 1/4 to 1/2 turn in the counterclockwise direction with the tire iron.

Carefully raise the rear of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands.

Please do NOT solely rely on the floor jack to support the vehicle.

If you are using a trolley style jack with a pump handle, place it under the frame rail of the SUV.

If you are using the scissor style jack that was included with the vehicle in the cargo area, place it under the pinch weld.

The jack stands should be placed under the frame rail of the SUV. Do not place the jack stands under the pinch weld since it could be damaged or bent.

I prefer to only work on one side of the car at a time to keep three tires on the ground for extra safety.

Spin off the five lug nuts and set them aside in a safe place.

Rear Caliper - NO EPB
Carefully remove the rear wheel and tire to reveal the caliper, bracket, rotor and suspension.

Some home mechanics choose to place the wheel and tire under the vehicle as an additional backup support device.

This 2020 Rogue Sport is equipped with the manual foot pedal operated emergency / parking brake.


Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

If your Qashqai or Rogue Sport has the EPB (electric parking brake), please check out my GM EPB Retraction Guide for some general information about manually retracting the actuator mechanism for an EPB.

From my research, the Qashqai and Rogue Sport with the EPB can be manually retracted by following these steps. 1. Remove the two Torx T30 bolts that secure the EPB motor to the rear caliper. 2. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the motor from the caliper. 3. Rotate the ball screw actuator rod in the clockwise direction with a 7mm Allen key wrench or hex head socket to retract it back. If you see the piston moving out away from the caliper, STOP. Do not allow the piston to pop out of the caliper. 4. Once the actuator rod has been fully retracted, slowly compress the caliper piston with an "F" clamp. If you encounter any resistance, STOP and make sure your vehicle has push-in rear caliper pistons instead of "screw-in" type rear pistons that need to be rotated back to retract them.

Since the 2020 Rogue Sport shown on this page has the manually operated parking brake with a foot lever, I can't verify that the instructions above are correct. Please be careful and verify the procedure before attempting it.

Lower Caliper Bolt / Pin
Loosen the bottom caliper bolt by turning it in the clockwise direction (as seen from the outside of the SUV looking in towards the cargo area) with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Then loosen the top caliper bolt by turning it in the clockwise direction (when viewed from the outside of the vehicle) with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

If you have trouble fitting your 14mm socket over the top caliper bolt due to the brake fluid hose being in the way, you can instead use a standard 14mm wrench.

Spin out the lower caliper bolt and slider pin combination unit.

Do NOT mix up the top and bottom caliper bolts / slider pins.

The bottom bolt / pin on this 2020 Rogue Sport had a black metal band near the tip while the top bolt / pin was entirely silver colored.

Spin out the top bolt / pin and guide it past the rubber brake fluid hose.

Pull the rear caliper off the old pads and out of the bracket.

Remove the top bolt / pin out of the caliper.

Pull the old brake pads out of the bracket.

Make a mental note of where the wear indicator bar or "squeal bar" is situated on the old brake pads.

On this 2020 Rogue Sport, the wear indicator bar was located at the bottom of the inner brake pad.

Replace Old Clips
If your new set of front pads includes a bag of replacement brake hardware, pull the old pad abutment or "anti-rattle" clips out of the top and bottom of the bracket.

Clean off the bracket, rotor, lug studs and rotor with brake parts cleaner spray.

Try to avoid breathing in the brake dust or the cleaning spray since they may be carcinogenic (cancer causing).

Apply a thin layer of brake parts lubricant grease to the top and bottom of the new pad abutment clips where they will come into contact with the bracket or the new pads.

Avoid getting grease on to the friction surfaces of the rotor or the new brake pads.

Push the new pad abutment clips into the top and bottom of the bracket. Make sure the clips are fully seated in place.

Compress Caliper Piston
In order for the caliper to fit over the thicker new brake pads, the piston needs to be compressed back or "retracted".

For this 2020 Rogue Sport with the manually operated foot pedal parking brake, the steps are the same as for the front brake calipers.

Attach the "F" clamp to the caliper and use the back of an old brake pad to evenly distribute the pressure across the piston.

Move to the engine bay and twist off the brake fluid reservoir cap in the counterclockwise direction.

Set the cap aside in a safe place.

Slowly turn the "F" clamp handle in the clockwise direction to compress back the caliper piston.

Repeatedly check the fluid level in the reservoir to make sure it doesn't overflow. Clean up any spilled brake fluid immediately since it can easily damage painted surfaces.

If the piston doesn't easily move back into the caliper, stop and make sure it is moving straight back and not at an angle.

If you encounter a lot of resistance, make sure the parking brake is not engaged and consult a professional to avoid damaging your vehicle.

Continue compressing back the piston until it is just about flush with the rubber dust boot that surrounds it.

Try to avoid pinching or otherwise damaging the rubber dust boot that surrounds the piston.

Replace the reservoir cap as soon as possible since brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air).

Twist on the cap in the clockwise direction.


Rotor Replacement Instructions

If your SUV has been exhibiting shuddering, vibrating or shaking in the rear while braking, the OEM rotors might be warped or worn out and should be replaced.

A few compatible rear brake rotors with their part numbers are as follows: ACDelco Silver 18A1664A, DuraGo BR3134902, Raybestos 980113R and Centric 120.42077.

To replace the rotors, remove the two 17mm bolts on the back side of the bracket and detach it from the wheel hub. Slide the old rotor off and slide the new one into place over the lug studs.

Lower the bracket into place and re-attach it with the two 17mm bolts.

If you have a torque wrench, the service manual specification for tightening the 17mm rear bracket bolts is 62 lb-ft (or 84 N-m).

Double check that the bracket bolts are tight before moving on to the next steps.


Orientate the wear indicator bar at the bottom of the inner brake pad.

Install the two new brake pads into the bracket.

Push the pads together until they are flush against the rotor.

In order for the caliper to operate smoothly, the two slider pins or "guide pins" need to be well lubricated.

Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the smooth parts of each slider pin. Avoid mixing up the top and bottom pins since they are different.

Slide the top bolt / pin back into the upper hole on the caliper.

Position the caliper so that you can push the top pin into the rubber dust boot on the bracket.

Lower the caliper over the new brake pads and into the bracket.

If the caliper won't over the thicker new brake pads, you might need to compress back the piston a bit more.

Tighten Top Caliper Bolt
Insert the bottom bolt / pin through the caliper and into the rubber dust boot attached to the bracket.

Tighten the two bolts by turning them in the counterclockwise direction (as seen from the outside of the vehicle) with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

The service manual specification for tightening the rear caliper bolts is 26 lb-ft (or 35 N-m).

Brake Fluid Bleeder Valve
If your brake pedal has been feeling soft or spongy, the brake fluid might contain some air bubbles or moisture.

It would be a good idea to bleed the brake lines and flush out the old fluid with fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid.

I highly recommend using the Allstar Performance Bleeder Bottle to bleed the brake lines. It makes the procedure a very easy one-person job compared to having an assistant repeatedly pump the brake pedal.

The brake fluid bleeder valve is located on the back side of the caliper just below the top bolt. To open and close the valve, you'll need an 8mm wrench.

In general, the brake line bleeding order for most vehicles is to start at the caliper furthest from the brake fluid reservoir and work your way to the closest caliper. So the order most likely should be as follows: right rear, right left, front right and front left.

The torque specification in the shop manual for tightening the bleeder valves is 73 lb-in (pound-inch) or 8.3 N-m.

Double check that all of the bolts are tight before moving on to the final steps.

Lower SUV From Stands
Carefully push the rear wheel and tire back into place over the lug studs.

Orientate the lug nuts with the tapered (smaller curved) end facing in towards the wheel.

Spin on the lug nuts a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to make sure they don't become cross threaded.

Slightly tighten the lug nuts by turning them in the clockwise direction with the tire iron in a "criss-cross" or "star" pattern.

Carefully lower the vehicle from the jack stands by using the floor jack.

Continue progressively tightening the five lug nuts in the clockwise direction in a criss-cross or star pattern until they are snug.

It would be best to use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the owner's manual specification of 80 lb-ft (or 108 N-m).

(The owner's manual for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Qashqai have a very similar torque specification of 83 lb-ft or 113 N-m for the "wheel bolts".)

Line up the plastic wheel cover with the cutout section for the valve stem in the appropriate position.

Gently but firmly tap on the hub cap with your fist to secure it in place. Verify that the wheel cover is securely attached.

Sit in the driver's seat and push down on the brake pedal a few times to help restore the brake line pressure.

Make sure the fluid level in the reservoir is at the "Full" or "Maximum" line.

If necessary, slowly pour in some new DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid until it reaches the full line.

(Check the required brake fluid specified on the reservoir cap. This 2020 Rogue Sport can use either DOT3 or DOT4.)

To break in your new pads, just drive normally for the first few hundred miles while trying to avoid any hard or "panic" stops to prevent from glazing over the new pads which could lead to noisy brakes and reduced braking performance.

It would be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for drops of fresh brake fluid over the next few days which might indicate a leak from the bleeder valve or the reservoir.

Be sure write down the procedure, the current mileage and the date in your vehicle's service records.
