This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
and 2017) Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in taking off the plastic
interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM speaker, add
soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or replace a
broken power window motor. Owners of other Mitsubishi vehicles such as the Lancer, Outlander, Mirage, ASX, RVR, Galant, I-MIEV, Montero, Eclipse, 3000GT, Endeavor, Raider, Diamante, Attrage, Carisma, Colt, Grandis, Magna, Pajero and the Space Star may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to remove the door panel include a small flathead screwdriver, a plastic pry bar tool and a standard Phillips head screwdriver. No tools are needed to remove the OEM door speaker. |

Pry Open Screw Cover |
Pry Off Sail Panel |
Sail Panel Removed |
The first two steps
are to lower the power window all the way down and then open the door. To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth. Gently pry out the plastic trim piece from behind the door opener handle with the small flathead screwdriver. Then move to the center of the armrest and pry out the small plastic screw cover at the bottom of the door pull well. Set the two plastic trim pieces aside in a safe place. Move to the top inner corner of the door frame and locate the triangular shaped sail panel. On some Mitsubishi models, the sail panel contains a tweeter speaker. Use the plastic pry bar tool to gently pull the sail panel off the door frame. (It is not necessary to disconnect the tweeter speaker power plug to remove the door panel.) |

Remove Door Handle Screw |
Longer Thin Screw |
Remove Armrest Screw |
Remove the screw
behind the door opener handle by turning it counterclockwise with a Phillips
head screwdriver. The door opener handle screw is long and thin. Then remove the screw at the bottom of the door pull well in the center of the armrest by turning it counterclockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver. |
||
Shorter Thick Screw |
Two Phillips Screws |
Pull Out Bottom Edge |
The armrest screw
is shorter and thicker than the door opener handle screw. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. Insert a large flathead screwdriver or the plastic pry bar tool in between the bottom edge of the door panel and the metal door frame. |
||
Release Pop Rivet Fasteners |
Lift Door Panel Off Frame |
Tilt Away Top Edge |
Firmly pull out the
bottom edge of the door panel to disengage the plastic pop rivets. Continue pulling out the pop rivet friction fasteners all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel. Lift the door panel up and off the top of the metal door frame. Tilt the top edge of the door panel towards yourself and support the bottom edge with your legs. |
||
Pull Out Plastic Collar |
Swing Out Metal Cable |
Door Opener Cable |
Locate the two
cables on the back side of the door panel that operate the door opener
handle and the door lock rocker switch. The cable with the yellow plastic collar at the top is attached to the door lock rocker switch. The door opener handle cable has a blue plastic collar. Pull the plastic collar out of the bracket, swing the cable away from the door panel and then lift the metal cylinder at the end of the cable out of its socket. |
||
Lift Out of Socket |
Electrical Connectors |
Press Release Tabs |
Press in the release tabs on the two electrical connectors at the underside of the switch panel before sliding them straight out of their sockets. | ||

Set the plastic

Disconnect Speaker Plug |
If any of the white
plastic pop rivets are still attached to the metal door frame, pry them out
and slide them back in to place on the plastic door panel. Press in the release tab at the top of the OEM door speaker before sliding it straight out of its socket. |
||
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Hold Panel Near Frame |
Push In Power Plugs |
Rotate the OEM door
speaker 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the door
frame. I recommend applying some Dynamat Sound Deadener to the metal door frame. It will help reduce any vibrations or rattles when you crank up the volume and allow your new speakers to sound their best. To replace the plastic door panel, hold it near the door frame and tilt the top edge towards yourself. Push the two power plugs back in to their sockets on the underside of the switch panel. |
||
Metal Cylinder In Socket |
Pop In Plastic Collar |
Replace Door Lock Cable |
Replace the cable
for the door opener handle by lowering the metal cylinder in to the socket
and then pop the blue plastic collar in to the bracket. Replace the cable for the door lock switch by re-inserting the metal cylinder in to the top socket and then snap the yellow plastic collar in to the bracket. |
||
Lower Panel On Frame |
Line Up Pop Rivets |
Firmly Tap In Fasteners |
Lower the top of
the door panel on to the upper lip of the metal door frame. Line up the white plastic pop rivets on the back side of the door panel with their corresponding holes in the metal door frame. Firmly tap in the pop rivets all along the bottom and both sides of the door panel. |
||
Line Up Sail Panel |
Push On Sail Panel |
Long Thin Screw |
If you disconnected
the tweeter speaker, push its power plug back in to place. Line up the sail panel and push it on to the door frame. Re-insert the longer and thinner screw behind the door opener handle. |
||
Tighten Clockwise |
Re-Insert Armrest Screw |
Tighten Phillips Clockwise |
Tighten the screw
in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver. Re-insert the shorter and thicker screw in to the bottom of the door pull well in the center of the armrest. Tighten the Phillips head armrest screw in the clockwise direction until it is snug. |
||
Pop In Screw Cover |
Snap In Trim Piece |
Door Panel Replaced |
Push the small
screw cover down in to place at the bottom of the door pull well in the
center of the armrest. Gently pop in the plastic trim piece behind the door opener handle. Sit inside the SUV, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, door lock switch, power window switch and power door lock switch all still work properly. For more, check out all of my
