For our
first few days in New Zealand, we checked into the Mercure Hotel
located at 8 Customs Street in the waterfront district of downtown
Auckland's CBD. We booked three nights at the Mercure Auckland while they were having a third night free special. The total cost was $158.92 which works out to just $52.97 USD per night. I chose this hotel because it was close to several stores we needed to visit such as The Warehouse (hiking gear), Vodafone (mobile broadband internet), and a Countdown / Foodtown Supermarket (groceries). The room was small but clean, comfortable, quiet, had a great view, and overall was perfect for our needs. It was also an excellent location for exploring the city of Auckland especially considering the low price per night. |

Since we were going
to be in New Zealand for a few months, I wanted to avoid paying the high
fees for internet access at hotels. There was a Vodafone store near the
Mercure Hotel where I signed up for a 3 GB per month 3G mobile broadband
internet account. I already had a white USB Vodafone "Vodem" stick that I
bought on eBay in the USA for about $70 before our trip. It was difficult at first to live with just 3 GB of data transfer per month since I come from the land of (almost) unlimited internet. But having the Vodafone 3G mobile broadband was perfect for our needs as we traveled across NZ. I even was able to set up an ad-hoc wireless network to get both of our Acer netbook computers online at the same time. |

On our last morning at the Mercure Auckland Hotel, we went to the top floor to have breakfast at the Vertigo Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant has an excellent view of the Auckland Harbour (harbor) and waterfront district to the north and the Auckland CBD (central business district) with its skyscraper buildings to the south. (I believe the Vertigo Restaurant has now been re-opened with "Vue Restaurant" as the new name.)

I spotted the beautiful red Ferrari F430 Italian sports car that you see above and below from our hotel room on the 10th floor. Before checking out, we walked over to the SkyCity Tower to watch brave people doing the SkyJump and SkyWalk at the very top of the tower.
