Move Rearview Mirror
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021) Mazda MX-5 Miata in changing a burnt out overhead dome light bulb (also known as the "map light") located above the rearview mirror.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda3 (Axela), Mazda5, Mazda6 (Atenza), CX-3, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, RX-8 and MPV may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement "festoon" style light bulb is part number DE3715 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

If you would like to have a brighter dome light, install a DE3175 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulb is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Pry Out Lens Cover
The first step is to rotate the rear view mirror down to create more working room below the dome light housing.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic pry bar tool.

Insert the blade of the tool into the small notch at the front edge of the lens cover (closest to the windshield).

Gently pry out the lens cover.

You may need to re-insert the screwdriver in several locations to fully remove the lens cover.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

Old Light Bulb Exposed
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Use the screwdriver or plastic pry bar tool to gently remove the old light bulb.

Only apply pressure to the metal end caps of the old light bulb.

Do not pry at the glass center of the old bulb to prevent from having it shatter and send shards of glass into your face.

Empty Bulb Socket
The original OEM light bulb was marked as part number KHA12V10W 17F13F which is the same as the DE3715.

If you would like to have a brighter dome light, install a compatible replacement DE3175 LED bulb.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try pulling it out of the socket, rotating it 180 degrees and pushing it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the positive "+" and negative "-" electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Test New Dome Light Bulb
Gently snap the lens cover back into place to secure the plastic retaining clips.

To test the new light bulb, slide the switch to the "On" position.

I recommend leaving the switch in the "Door" position so that the light will turn on every time the driver or passenger door is opened.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
