This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the first generation (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & the
updated 2016 model year) Mazda CX-5 SUV in checking or changing a
blown fuse or relay in either the engine bay or interior passenger
compartment electrical panels. Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, CX-7, CX-9, and the MX-5 Miata may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. This 2013 CX-5 was equipped with the relatively newer style of low profile mini blade fuses. If necessary, you can replace them with the older style standard mini blade fuses, which are slightly taller. A plastic fuse puller tool should be included on the underside of the engine bay electrical panel cover. If it is missing, you may also use a pair of needle nose pliers with rubber insulated handles. |

Fuse Puller Tool Missing |
The engine bay fuse
box is located at the front right area of the engine bay next to the 12V
automotive battery. To release the fuse box cover, gently pull out the front retaining clip towards yourself. Then push in the release tab on the rear edge of the cover. Lift the cover straight off the box and set it aside in a safe place. There is a fuse location diagram on the underside of the cover and also another one in the owner's manual. There should be a plastic fuse puller tool attached to the underside of the fuse box cover. If the tool is missing, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers with rubber insulated handles while wearing gloves for extra safety. |

Pull Out Old Fuse |
Old "Low Profile" Fuse Removed |
Hold Up To Light Bulb |
Grasp the old fuse
that you'd like to check or replace and pull it straight out of the socket. Hold the old fuse up to a light source and examine it. If the thin metal strip in the translucent plastic center of the old fuse appears to be burnt or broken then the fuse is "blown" and needs to be replaced. If the thin metal bar in the center of the old fuse appears to be intact, it should still be good. But since new fuses are so cheap, it should still be replaced as part of your electrical issue troubleshooting process. |

Push In New Fuse |
New Fuse Installed |
Line Up Fuse Block Cover |
Push a new low profile mini blade fuse of the same amperage rating (e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25) straight in to the socket. The CX-5 is equipped with "low profile" mini blade fuses, but you may replace them with the slightly taller traditional style mini blade fuses. The standard mini blade fuses will just stick out of the socket a tiny bit further. Line up the plastic cover over the engine bay fuse block. |
||
Gently Push On Cover |
Re-Insert Interior Cover |
Gently Snap In Access Panel |
Gently push on the
fuse box cover back until the two retaining clips "click" securely in to
place. Line up the interior passenger compartment fuse block access panel and gently push it back in to place. Test the electrical component that you were having issues with such as the radio, wiper blades, tail lights, headlights, power windows, door locks, etc. If you are still having the same electrical problem, you might have a shorted wire somewhere or the component itself needs to be replaced with a new unit.
