Box - Support Hood

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020) Infiniti QX60 luxury SUV in changing weak, failing or faulty hood lift support struts (also known as "gas charged shocks", "prop rods" or "springs").

Owners of other Infiniti and Nissan vehicles such as the JX35, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX80, Pathfinder, Murano, Rogue, Armada, Kicks, Frontier, Titan, NV, NV200, 370Z, GT-R, Leaf, Maxima, Altima, Sentra and Versa might also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) struts were marked as part number Nissan 65470-3JA0A (369977 0250N 295/19 B 10).

A few compatible replacement aftermarket struts with their part numbers include the following: Sachs SG425026, StrongArm 6847, Lujuntec 6847, LiftzItUp PM3883 and Tuff Support 614022.

The only tool needed to remove and replace the hood struts is a small flat head screwdriver.

The first step is to open the hood. Have an assistant hold up the hood for you if the old struts are unable to keep the hood open.

Since I was working by myself, I chose to wedge a roll of paper towels and place a cardboard box in between the black plastic cowl near the windshield and the rear edge of the hood to support it.

If you choose to place some towels or other items in between the hood and the windshield to keep the hood open, make sure the hood is securely supported before continuing on to the next steps.

Please make sure the hood is properly supported by your assistant or some items wedged in between the cowl and the hood.

Locate the "C" shaped metal retaining clips at the top and bottom of the old support strut.

Carefully insert the blade of the small flat head screwdriver into the small notch in between the retaining clip and the lower end of the strut.

Gently pry back the retaining clip until the socket on the end of the strut can be pulled off the ball mount attached to the engine bay.

Then insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver into the notch in the middle of the top "C" clip and pry it out.

Pull the top of the strut of the ball mount attached to the head.

The OEM part number on the strut in this 2020 QX60 was 369977 0250N 295/19 B 10 65470-3JA0A.

I recommend purchasing the StrongArm 6847 support struts since they have excellent reviews from other QX60 and JX35 owners.

Make sure the "C" shaped retaining clips are in the slightly out and released position on the new strut.

Orientate the new strut with the gas charged shock part on the top and the smaller metal bar on the bottom.

Push the ball socket at the top of the strut over the ball mount.

If necessary, use the small flat head screwdriver to pull out the retaining clip until you can pop the socket over the ball mount.

Test New Hood Struts
Push on the "C" shaped retaining clip to secure the top of the strut into place.

Repeat the procedure to secure the bottom socket of the strut to the lower ball mount on the engine bay.

Double check that the two ends of the strut are securely installed.

Repeat the process to replace the strut on the other side of the vehicle.

If you placed any support items between the cowl and the hood, hold the hood up with one hand and remove them with the other hand.

Carefully test the new support struts by opening and closing the hood.

Be sure to write down the strut change in your vehicle's service records.
