Fort
Caroline was founded at St. Johns Bluff in 1564 as a refuge for a
group of French Protestants known as Huguenots. The settlement lasted about a year before the Spanish sent hundreds of soldiers to decimate the majority of the people living there. Now the Fort Caroline National Memorial serves as a historical attraction built on the approximate site of the original settlement complete with antique French cannons. The fort is located about 12 miles east of downtown JAX at 12713 Fort Caroline Road, Jacksonville, FL 32225. Visitors are welcome on the grounds every day from 9 AM to 5 PM except Thanksgiving, December 25th and January 1st. Fort Caroline is a free family friendly attraction with plenty of parking. Donations are accepted in the Timucuan Preserve Visitor Center. |

We were lucky enough to be admiring the waters of the St. Johns River from Fort Caroline when a large pod of dolphins or porpoises were swimming through the area.

I'd highly recommend bringing OFF or some other sort of insect repellant when hiking through the nature paths at Fort Caroline. We had to jog through the trail to avoid being swarmed by thirsty mosquitoes.
