Ford Flex Dome Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out overhead dome light bulb in a 1st generation 2009 to 2019 Ford Flex crossover SUV.

Plastic Pry Bar Tool
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019) Ford Flex crossover SUV in changing a burnt out dome light bulb or rear passenger courtesy reading light bulb in the overhead housing attached to the headliner.

Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicle such as the Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-Max, Mustang, Taurus, EcoSport, Escape, Edge, Expedition, Transit Connect, F-150, Ranger, MKZ, MKC, Navigator, MKX and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The replacement festoon style light bulb is part number 578.

If you would like to have brighter dome lights, install some compatible 578 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver.

Loosen Lens Cover

Lens Cover Removed
Insert the blade of the plastic pry bar tool in between the rear edge of the lens cover and the fabric headliner.

Gently loosen the lens cover.

You may need to re-insert the pry bar tool in several locations at the rear edge of the lens cover to remove it.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop off relatively easily.

Three Light Bulbs
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

The housing contains one "dome" light bulb in the center and two courtesy reading light bulbs for the second row of passenger seats.

Old Light Bulb Removed
If the old light bulbs were recently turned on, be careful when you remove them.

The bulbs might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Push In New Light Bulb
The two courtesy / reading lights can easily be removed with your fingers.

To remove the center dome light, use the plastic pry bar tool to remove one of the end caps.

Push In New Dome Bulb
The OEM light bulbs are marked as part number PLW 578.

Push a new number 578 light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have brighter lights, install some compatible 578 LED festoon bulbs.

(Tip - If you install LED bulbs and they don't work at first, try pulling them out of the socket, rotate them 180 degrees and re-insert them into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.)

Line Up Lens Cover

Pop Lens Cover In Place
Line up the lens cover with the openings for the light switches in the correct position.

Gently snap the lens cover back into place.

Test New Dome Light

Testing Reading Lights
To test the new dome light bulb, open a passenger door or press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
