For our
first visit to the "Windy City" of Chicago, I splurged a bit and
reserved a room at the Westin Hotel in downtown Chicago on the
Magnificent Mile. The location of this Westin Hotel was excellent with the John Hancock Center building located directly across the street. We were also within walking distance of the Navy Pier Amusement Park, the malls and shops on the Magnificent Mile, and the nightlife over on Rush Street. Before I booked the room, I joined the Starwood Preferred Guest Program since I had heard that it would help speed up the check in/out process. If I was a frequent Starwood guest, I
would accumulate points for free nights, but on this trip, being a SPG
member only allowed me to check in faster and enjoy a free bottle of
refreshing water.

When I had booked the room online, at $219.00 a night plus taxes, I requested a "larger corner room with a view" in the special requests field of the reservation form. Unfortunately, neither of my wishes were granted, but our room was a good size for the two of us. The "Heavenly" California king sized bed was very comfortable, while the "Heavenly Bath" was nice but not extraordinary with just a double headed shower water massager.

The rest of the furnishings and the room's amenities were of high quality and appeared to be in very good condition. The Westin mini-bar refrigerator was temptingly packed with tasty treats and refreshing beverages, but a trip to the Walgreens a few blocks down Michigan Ave. was a real money saver.

Overall, the Westin Hotel @ The Magnificent Mile in Downtown Chicago was a good value, mostly for it's convenient location. I don't foresee us visiting Chicago anytime in the near or distant future, but if we did venture back, I'd opt for a less expensive hotel further from the Magnificent Mile and employ taxis to get around. |
