This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and maybe also the 2021 model year) Hyundai Elantra sedan in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the trunk lid or upgrading both lights to brighter LED bulbs.

Owners of other Hyundai, Genesis or Kia vehicles such as the Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Kona, Nexo, Venue, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, G70, G80, G90, Soul, Sportage, Niro, Sorento, Telluride, Rio, Forte, Optima, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sedona and Seltos may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as W5W).

If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, install some 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to remove the light housings and access the bulbs is a small plastic pry bar tool or a small flat head screwdriver.

The steps for replacing the left (driver) or right (passenger) side light bulbs are the same.

Insert the blade of your screwdriver or the plastic pry bar tool in between the inner edge of the light housing and the trunk lid.

Gently pry out the light housing.

Right Housing Removed
Carefully pull the light housing out of the underside of the trunk lid.

The retaining clips on the light housings are actually located on the outer edge, but I found it much easier to remove the housings by prying out the small plastic tabs on the inner edges.

However you choose to pry out the light housings, just be gentle and don't use excessive force. They should pop out relatively easily.

Use the small plastic pry bar tool or a flat head screwdriver to gently separate the grey light housing from the translucent plastic lens cover.

You may need to insert the blade of the screwdriver in several locations to release the retaining clips.

Try to avoid using excessive force when prying off the lens cover.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow the bulb to cool off before touching it.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of its socket.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb part number was KHA12V5W W5W.

Push a new number 2825 miniature wedge base light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs.

Test New Light Bulbs
Repeat the process if you removed the other light housing.

To test the new light bulbs, turn on the parking lights or the headlights. You could also press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the exterior lights.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it isn't working, try removing the new bulb from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correction orientation.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
