This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and probably also the upcoming 2021 model year) Hyundai Elantra sedan in changing a burnt out dome light bulb located in the housing attached to the headliner above the rear passenger seats (or upgrading it to a brighter LED unit).

Owners of other Hyundai, Genesis or Kia vehicles such as the Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Kona, Nexo, Venue, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, G70, G80, G90, Soul, Sportage, Niro, Sorento, Telluride, Rio, Forte, Optima, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sedona and Seltos may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement festoon style light bulb is part number DE3175.

If you would like to have a brighter dome light bulb that will also last a lot longer before burning out, choose a compatible festoon style DE3175 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulb is a small flat head screwdriver or a small plastic pry bar tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic trim removal tool.

Locate the two small notches on the front edge of the lens cover by the "On / Off" switch" (situated closer to the front of the car).

Lens Cover Removed
Gently pry out the lens cover.

You may need to remove and re-insert the blade of the screwdriver into the second notch to fully remove the lens cover.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow it to cool off for a few minutes and be careful when you remove it.

Grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb in this 2018 Elantra was marked as part number KHA12V8W 17J16A.

Test New Light Bulb
Push a new number DE3175 festoon style light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have a brighter dome light that will also last much longer than the traditional incandescent bulb before burning out, install a compatible replacement DE3175 LED bulb.

Double check that the new bulb is securely installed in the socket.

To test the new light bulb, push the "On / Off" switch.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try pulling it out of the socket, rotating it 180 degrees and pushing it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Retaining Clips Secured
Line up the lens cover with the opening in the light housing.

First, re-insert the two larger plastic tabs on the rear edge into the housing.

Then gently snap in the two smaller retaining clips on the front edge of the lens cover back into the housing.

Make sure that every edge of the lens cover is flush with the border of the light housing.

To test the new light bulb, press the "On / Off" button.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
