This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the tenth
generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Honda Civic in changing a burnt out map
light bulb located in the overhead console or upgrading them both to
brighter LED units. Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Insight, Clarity, Fit, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey, Ridgeline, ILX, MDX, RDX, NSX, RLX and TLX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 168. If you would like to have brighter bulbs that will also last a lot longer, install some 168 LED units. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a small plastic pry bar tool. Insert the blade of your tool in between the inner edge of the lens cover and overhead housing. (Close to the switches.) |

Plastic Retaining Clips |
Gently pry out the
lens cover. You may need to re-insert your screwdriver a few times in order to fully remove the lens cover. Avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily. Do not pry along the outer edge of the lens cover to avoid breaking the retaining clips. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Set the lens cover
aside in a safe place. If the old light bulb was recently illuminated, be careful when you remove it. The bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket. |

The old light bulb
was marked as a 12V8W.
You can use any miniature wedge base light bulb such as the 168, 194, 2825 or W5W. I recommend installing a brighter and longer lasting compatible replacement 168 LED bulb. Push the new light bulb straight into the socket. To test the new light bulb before you re-install the lens cover, push in the white plastic "On/Off" button. Tip - If you installed LED bulbs and they don't work at first, try removing the bulbs from the sockets, rotating them 180 degrees and pushing them back into place. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. |

Line up the
translucent plastic lens cover with the light housing in the overhead
console. Make sure that the retaining clips are aligned with the mounting pegs or "nubs" on the sides of the light housing. |

Test New Map Light Bulbs |
Gently snap in the
lens cover to secure the retaining clips. Make sure that the lens cover is flush with the overhead console. Test the new bulbs again by pushing on the outer edges of the lens covers to activate the "On/Off" switches. Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. Please
