Pry Out Front Edge
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the tenth generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Honda Civic in taking off the plastic interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM speakers, add soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or change a broken power window motor.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Insight, Clarity, Fit, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey, Ridgeline, ILX, MDX, RDX, NSX, RLX and TLX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a plastic pry bar tool and a Phillips head screwdriver.

To remove the OEM front door speakers, you'll need an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to lower the power window all the way down and then fully open the door. I chose to start with the front passenger door. The steps are the same or very similar for the front driver side door and the two rear doors.

If you live in a cold climate, I recommend doing this inside of a warm garage with a space heater to prevent from breaking any of the plastic parts. Plastic tends to be more brittle when cold and more flexible when warm.

Insert the blade of the plastic pry bar tool or a small flat head screwdriver in between the front edge of the switch panel and the arm rest.

Pull Off Switch Panel
Gently pry up the front edge of the switch panel to release the plastic retaining clips.

Continue prying along the side and then the rear edge of the switch panel.

Try to avoid using excessive force.

The switch panel should pop out relatively easily.

Turn over the switch panel to access the electrical connector.

Push in the release tab on the electrical connector before sliding it straight out of its socket.

If the release button is very stiff, you can use the plastic pry bar tool or a flat head screwdriver to push it in.

Set the switch panel aside in a safe place.

Once the switch panel is out of the way, you'll be able to see the single silver metal screw in the center of the arm rest.

Remove the screw by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with a Phillips head screwdriver.

Set the screw aside with the switch panel.

(Unlike most other cars, the door opener handle is not part of the door panel and will remain attached to the door frame.)

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) speaker is located at the bottom inner corner of the door frame.

Push in the two release tabs on the electrical connector before pulling it straight off the old speaker.

The OEM speaker part number is Honda TFF7362.

The front door speaker can be replaced with new aftermarket car speakers in the following sizes: 6 1/2" (6.5") and 6 3/4" (6.75").

I highly recommend adding some Dynamat sound deadener to the metal door frame and the back side of the plastic door panel to help stop vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume.

(If you would like to replace or upgrade the tweeter speaker in the sail panel at the top inner corner of the door frame, do that before replacing the door panel.)

To replace the door panel, hold it near the door frame.

Carefully lower the top of the door panel on to the upper lip on the door frame.

Line up the plastic pop rivets on the back side of the door panel with their corresponding holes in the door frame.

Be sure to write down the speaker upgrade or any other procedure in your vehicle's service records.
