This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the tenth generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Honda Civic in cleaning or changing the air conditioning system's cabin air filter element located in the HVAC blower motor housing.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Insight, Clarity, Fit, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey, Ridgeline, ILX, MDX, RDX, NSX, RLX and TLX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers include the following: Bosch 6037C, EcoGard XC36080, Spearhead BE-182, Fram CF11182, EPAuto CP182, TYC 800125P and K&N VF2033.

No tools are needed to access and replace the filter.

The first few steps are to sit in the front passenger seat, open the glove box and empty out the contents.

Once the glove box is out of the way, you'll be able to see the HVAC blower motor housing and the rectangular shaped black plastic filter access panel.

There are two release tabs for the filter access cover with one on the left side and the other on the right side.

Inspect Old Element

Check Both Sides
Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, pollen, soot, insects, twigs, leaves, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the Spearhead BE-182 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon from other tenth generation Civic owners.

If you would like to have a washable and re-usable filter, choose the K&N VF2033.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner.

I chose to clean my old filter with a wet/dry shop vacuum and re-install it until the new filter arrives from Amazon.

Check the filter slot in the HVAC blower motor housing for any foreign objects such as leaves, insects or twigs.

Use the crevice tool attachment for your vacuum cleaner to clean the filter slot.

Orientate the new filter with the "Air Flow" arrow pointing down towards the floor mat.

Cabin Air Filter Replaced
Replace the contents of the glove box such as your owner's manual, registration, insurance card and a stack of fast food restaurant napkins.

Close the glove box to complete the job.

Be sure to write down the filter change in your car's service records.

Enjoy the fresh clean air from you A/C system!
