This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the tenth
generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Honda Civic in cleaning or changing the
air conditioning system's cabin air filter element located in the HVAC
blower motor housing. Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Insight, Clarity, Fit, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey, Ridgeline, ILX, MDX, RDX, NSX, RLX and TLX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers include the following: Bosch 6037C, EcoGard XC36080, Spearhead BE-182, Fram CF11182, EPAuto CP182, TYC 800125P and K&N VF2033. No tools are needed to access and replace the filter. The first few steps are to sit in the front passenger seat, open the glove box and empty out the contents. |

Release Rubber Side Stops |
Lower To Floor Mat |
Firmly push in the
two side walls of the glove box towards each other until the rubber side
stops are clear of the dashboard. Gently lower the glove box down to the floor mat. |

Filter Access Cover |
Left Side Release Tab |
Right Side Release Tab |
Once the glove box
is out of the way, you'll be able to see the HVAC blower motor housing and
the rectangular shaped black plastic filter access panel. There are two release tabs for the filter access cover with one on the left side and the other on the right side. |
||
Push In To Release Clip |
Push In Right Side Tab |
Pull Off Filter Cover |
Push in the tabs to
release the retaining clips before pulling the cover straight off the filter
housing. You'll notice that the filter cover has two arrows pointing in the down direction with the words "Air Flow" in between them. |

Pull Out Old Filter |
Set the filter
cover aside in a safe place. Slide the old filter straight out of the slot. |

Inspect Old Element |
Check Both Sides |
Inspect both sides
of the old filter.
If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, pollen, soot, insects, twigs, leaves, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the Spearhead BE-182 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon from other tenth generation Civic owners. If you would like to have a washable and re-usable filter, choose the K&N VF2033. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner. |

Clean With Vacuum |
Empty Filter Slot |
Air Flow - Down Arrow |
I chose to clean my
old filter with a wet/dry shop vacuum and re-install it until the new filter
arrives from Amazon. Check the filter slot in the HVAC blower motor housing for any foreign objects such as leaves, insects or twigs. Use the crevice tool attachment for your vacuum cleaner to clean the filter slot. Orientate the new filter with the "Air Flow" arrow pointing down towards the floor mat. |
||
Slide In New Air Filter |
Line Up Access Cover |
Push On Filter Cover |
Slide the new
filter straight into the slot. Make sure the new filter is fully seated in the blower motor housing. Line up the filter access cover with the "Air Flow" arrows pointing down towards the floor. Push the filter cover into place. You should feel or hear the two retaining clips "click" securely into place. |

Raise Glove Box |
Push In Side Walls |
Double check that
the filter cover is securely attached and flush with the blower motor
housing. Raise the glove box towards the dashboard. Firmly push in the two side walls of the glove box towards each other until the rubber side stops can be re-inserted behind the dashboard. |

Side Stoppers Secured |
Close Glove Box |
Cabin Air Filter Replaced |
Replace the
contents of the glove box such as your owner's manual, registration,
insurance card and a stack of fast food restaurant napkins.
Close the glove box to complete the job. Be sure to write down the filter change in your car's service records. Enjoy the fresh clean air from you A/C system! Please check out all of my
