This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 GM Chevrolet Cruze in changing a burnt out map light bulb or front dome light bulb in the overhead console.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Holden such as the Sonic, Spark, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Bolt, Camaro, Corvette, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Colorado, Silverado, Express, TrailBlazer, Encore, Regal TourX, Envision, Enclave, LaCrosse, Cascada, Sierra, Canyon, Acadia, Terrain, Yukon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT5, CTS-V, XTS, CT6, ATS, Astra and Commodore may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as W5W).

If you would like to upgrade the lights to brighter bulbs, install some 2825 LED units.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver in between the translucent plastic lens cover and the overhead console.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, I recommend using a small plastic pry bar tool (also known as a trim panel removal tool).

Continue Prying Lens
Gently pry out the lens cover to release the retaining clips.

You will need to re-insert the screwdriver or pry bar tool into several locations around the lens cover to fully release all of the clips.

Try to avoid using excessive force.

The lens cover should pop off relatively easily.

Light Bulbs Exposed
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

Once the lens cover is out of the way, you'll be able to see the two map light bulbs at the outer edges of the housing and the front dome light bulb situated in the center of the housing.

Empty Bulb Socket
If the old lights were recently turned on, be careful when you remove the bulbs. The old bulbs might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

New Bulbs Installed
The OEM (original equipment manufacurer) light bulb was marked as part number W5W which is the same voltage and wattage as the much more common 2825 light bulb (12V, 5W).

Push a new number 2825 miniature wedge base light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have brighter map lights that will also last a lot longer before burning out, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulb.

Line Up Lens Cover
I recommend testing the new light bulbs before you re-install the lens cover.

Press the "On / Off" buttons for the two map lights and move the rocker switch for the dome light to the "On" position.

Line up the lens cover with the overhead housing.
