This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 2nd generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 model years) Kia Soul in changing a weak or dead battery in the key fob remote control for the keyless entry system.

Owners of other Kia, Hyundai or Genesis vehicles such as the Niro, Sportage, Sedona, Telluride, Sorento, Rio, Forte, Optima, K900, Cadenza, Stinger, Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, Venue, G70, G80 and G90 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement coin cell (also known as a "watch" or "button") battery is part number CR2032 which is available from various manufacturers such as Panasonic, Energizer, Sony, Duracell and Maxell.

To access and replace the battery, you may need a plastic pry bar tool and / or a small flat head screwdriver.

The first step is to release the "switchblade" style metal ignition key by pressing the chrome silver colored button at the top left of the fob near the "Lock" button.

Insert the plastic pry bar tool or your thumb into the void on the side of the fob where the key used to reside.

Carefully pull off the plastic cover on the back of the fob.

Install New Battery
The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) battery in the fob for this 2019 Soul was a Panasonic CR2032 3V coin cell.

Orientate the new battery with the "+" positive side facing up towards you and the "-" negative side facing down towards the green circuit board.

Gently insert the new CR2032 battery into the socket and pop it into place.

Test New Fob Battery
Pop the back cover into place.

Make sure that the battery cover is flush with the rest of the fob at every edge.

To test the new battery, stand near your Soul and press the "Unlock" or "Lock" buttons.

If the new battery is working properly, you should see the parking lights flash and also hear the door locks opening or closing.

Be sure to write down the battery change in your vehicle's service records.

(The key fob should not need to be reprogrammed. Just replacing the battery does not clear the original programming.)
