This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the eleventh generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018)
Toyota Corolla in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil
filter on the 2ZR-FE 1.8 liter inline four cylinder engine. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The items needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench, an AST Tools # TOY 640 64mm oil filter wrench ), a 24mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet, a new cartridge style oil filter and 5 U.S. quarts of SAE 0W-20 oil. Note - You'll need to purchase 5 U.S. quarts of new oil but the 2ZR-FE 1.8L I4 engine's total capacity specification for an oil change with a filter replacement is 4.4 U.S. quarts (or 4.2L). A few compatible cartridge oil filter elements include the following with their part numbers: Toyota 04152-YZZA6, Purolator L16311, Mobil 1 M1C-154, K&N PS-7021, Fram CH10358, Wix 57064, ACDelco PF1768, Mann ML 1048, Mahle OX416D1ECO and Hastings # LF640. |

Lift Up Oil Dipstick |
Raise Front of Car |
Black Metal Oil Pan |
The first steps are
to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the car on a level surface and
then turn off the engine.
Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and allow it to drain out more quickly. Engage the emergency / parking brake and chock both sides of the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counter clockwise direction and lift up the oil level dipstick an inch or two. Removing the cap and pulling up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. Raise the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with the two jack stands. There is a jack point under the car near the front middle area of the engine bay. It looks like a large metal loop. |

Silver Metal Oil Drain Bolt |
Oil Filter Housing |
Used Oil Catch Container |
Slide under the
front passenger side of the engine bay with the used oil catch basin, a 14mm
socket and a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench. Locate the silver metal oil drain bolt at the rear edge of the black metal oil pan. The bolt head faces towards the back of the car. Move the used oil catch container to underneath the oil drain bolt. |
||
Loosen 14mm Drain Bolt |
Check Drain Bolt Washer |
Drain Out Old Oil |
Remove the oil
drain bolt by turning it counter clockwise with the 14mm socket and 3/8"
drive ratcheting wrench.
Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt since the old oil may be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine in the first step. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows to an occasional drip.Inspect the metal washer on the oil drain bolt. If it appears to be in good condition, you may choose to re-use it. Otherwise, it should be replaced with a new washer. You can buy new washers at your Toyota dealership or most auto parts stores. |
||
Replace Oil Drain Bolt |
Oil Filter Wrench & 24mm |
Black Plastic Filter Housing |
Re-insert the oil
drain bolt and spin it in by hand a few turns in the clockwise direction to
prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the oil drain bolt with the 14mm socket and ratcheting wrench in the clockwise direction to just past hand tight. If you have a torque wrench, the service manual torque specification for the oil drain bolt is 27 lb-ft (or 37 N*m). Locate the round black plastic engine oil filter housing. |

AST Tools TOY 640 |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Pull Out Old Filter |
In order to remove
the black plastic cartridge oil filter housing, you'll need a 64mm oil
filter wrench with 14 flats or "flutes" such as the
AST Tools # TOY640
or the Toyota SST (Special Service Tool) #
09228-06500-02, or part number
09228-06501.

Remove Old Rubber O-Ring |
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Lubricate New Gasket |
Pull the old filter
out of the cap and discard it. Carefully pull the old o-ring gasket off the threads on the filter cap and throw it away. I'd recommend buying the OEM Toyota 04152-YZZA6 oil filters since they have excellent reviews on Amazon. Dip your pinky finger in some new SAE 0W-20 oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket that was included with the new cartridge oil filter. Lubricating the new o-ring will help it form a better seal and make it easier to remove the cap during the next oil change. |
||
Install New Oil Filter |
Tighten Filter Cap Clockwise |
Pour In New SAE 0W-20 Oil |
Push the new rubber
o-ring on to the oil filter cap until it rests at the bottom of the threads. Insert the new cartridge oil filter in to the cap until it clicks securely in to place. Spin on the oil filter cap in the clockwise direction. Use the oil filter wrench to continue tightening the cap in the clockwise direction to just past hand tight. The service manual specification for tightening the oil filter cap on the 2ZR-FE 1.8L I4 engine is 18 lb-ft (or 25 N*m) of torque. Double check that the oil drain bolt and oil filter cap are tight before moving on to the next steps. Carefully lower the front of the car from the jack stands using the floor jack.Insert an automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole and pour in about 4 quarts of the engine's 4.4 U.S. quarts total capacity for an oil change with filter change. (The engine oil capacity is 4.4 US quarts, 4.2 liters or 3.7 Imperial quarts.) It is far better to have less than enough oil in an engine than to over fill it. You may have to pour in the entire 4.4 US quarts total capacity depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out. |
||
Replace Oil Filler Cap |
Check Dipstick Oil Level |
Replace Oil Dipstick |
Temporarily replace
the oil filler cap, start the engine, let it run for a few minutes, shut it
off, and allow the oil to drain down to the oil pan for at least 5 to 10
minutes. Pull the oil dipstick out, wipe it clean, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more SAE 0W-20 oil while repeatedly checking the level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper dot which indicates the "Full" or "Maximum" line. Replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on the clockwise direction. To reset the "MAINT REQD" (maintenance required) light on the driver's instrument display panel, first press the "Odo/Trip" button to display "Trip A". Then switch the ignition to "Off", press and hold the Odo/Trip button, and turn the ignition switch to the "On" position but don't start the engine.You should see 6 dashes start flashing as they disappear and then 6 zeroes will briefly flash on the display. The "Maint Reqd" light should now be off. Make sure you record the oil change in your car's service records. It's also a good idea to check your driveway or parking spot for drops of oil and check the oil level on the dipstick during the next few days.
