This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the fifth generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 &
2016) Toyota 4Runner SUV in changing a burnt out map light bulb in
the overhead console or upgrading them both to brighter LED units. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A replacement light bulb is part number 168 or 2825 which are available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA. If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible replacement 168 LED or 2825 LED bulbs. The tools needed to access and replace the map light bulbs include a small flathead screwdriver and either a plastic zip / cable tie or some stiff electrical wire. |

Remove Middle Lens Cover |
Cable Zip Tie Loop / Lasso |
To prevent from
scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of your
screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth. Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in between the inner edge of the lens cover and the overhead console. Gently pry out the lens cover and set it aside in a safe place. Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily. For more working room, I also pulled out the center lens cover in between the two map lights. The bulb socket is a bit recessed in to the housing and seemed very difficult to remove with my bare fingers. At first I tried putting on a rubber glove to get a better grip, but that didn't work either. Rather than damage the silver metal reflector or pull down the entire overhead console, I figured out that I could "lasso" the old bulb out by creating a loop (circle) with a plastic zip / cable tie. You might also be able to use some electrical wire. |

OEM Toshiba W5W Bulb |
Place the plastic
loop over the old bulb and then gently pull it out. The OEM map light bulb in this 2015 4Runner was a Toshiba part number W5W which can be difficult to find. I'd recommend that you use the readily available 168 or 2825 light bulbs or a brighter LED equivalent bulb. |

Empty Bulb Socket |
Push In New 168 or 2825 |
Replace Center Plastic Piece |
Push a new 168,
W5W, 2825 or 194 bulb straight in to the socket. If you removed the middle lens cover, pop it back in to place. |

Re-Insert Plastic Tab |
Pop In Retaining Clips |
Test New Map Light Bulbs |
Re-insert the
plastic tab on the outer edge of the lens cover back in to the housing
first. Then gently pop in the retaining clips on the inner edge of the lens cover. Test the new map light bulbs by pressing the outer edge of the lens cover to activate the "On/Off" switches. For more,
