Flaco’s Cuban Bakery & Coffee Spot Review – Gainesville, FL
My friends and I were some of the first few people to eat at the new mid-town location of Flaco’s Cuban Bakery that just opened today across the street from campus in the UF Plaza at 1702 W. University Ave.
I ordered the “Best Cuban In Town” for $6.96 while my friends each ordered an arepa with shredded pork ($4.95 each) and also split a Cuban Gator sandwich between the two of them.
Their arepas (yellow cornmeal patties with melted queso and shredded pork) looked and smelled great. They vanished quickly with a few “mmm’s” uttered, so I imagine they tasted good.
My Cuban sandwich had very flavorful shredded pork that went well with the ham, mustard, pickle slices, mayo and Swiss cheese. I did wish they had left it in the sandwich press longer since the cheese wasn’t very melted, some of the pork in the middle was just lukewarm and there was a cold pickle slice or two.
My friend commented that their “Cuban Gator” (shredded beef & pork) seemed to have less meat than my traditional “Best Cuban” sandwich. I did notice that their sandwich looked smaller than mine.
Although I would have liked the sandwich to have been pressed longer, it was still very tasty and satisfied my appetite with out the need for other side dishes or chips.
Since this establishment has the word “bakery” in their name, I do have to mention that the Cuban bread surrounding my sandwich was very fresh and tasted great.
A few other customers ordered coffee while we were eating and the aromas were enticing. They have the standard Cuban coffee espresso shot, Cortaditos, Cafe con Leche, Colada and even iced coffee.
I’ll definitely be going back again in the future to try another Cuban sandwich, one of their other pressed sandwiches, the empanadas, the meat/rice/bean bowls or the tempting Cuban pastries.
