This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) Volvo XC60 SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tailgate.

Owners of other Volvo vehicles such as the XC90, XC70, S90, S80, S60, S40, C30, C70, V90, V70, V60 and V40 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement festoon style light bulb is part number 6418 or GE 7546.

You can also use a brighter compatible 6418 LED bulb.

The tools needed to access and replace the light bulbs include a Torx T20 star bit screwdriver and possibly also a small flathead screwdriver.

Gently Pry Out Housing
The two license plate light housings are each held in place to the tailgate by two screws.

Loosen the screws by turning them counterclockwise with the Torx T-20 screwdriver.

Set the two screws aside in a safe place.

If the light housing doesn't just fall out of the tailgate, you might need to gently pry it out with a small flathead screwdriver.
