This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) Volkswagen Tiguan SUV in cleaning or changing the air conditioning system's cabin air filter element in the HVAC blower motor housing.

Owners of other VW or Audi vehicles such as the Jetta, Passat, CC, Atlas, Touareg, Golf, Beetle, A3, S3, RS 3, A4, S4, A5, A6, S6, A7, S7, RS 7, A8, Q3, Q5, TT and Q7 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement cabin air filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mann-Filter CUK 2939, EPAuto CP939, Fram CF10373, Volkswagen 1K1-819-653-B, Bosch C3807WS, TYC 800015C, POTAUTO MAP 4002C, Wix 24489, MAHLE LA 181 and Hastings AFC1355.

No tools are required to access and replace the cabin air filter.

Locate the rectangular shaped black plastic filter access cover at the bottom of the HVAC blower motor housing.

Place your fingers on the plastic tab on the right side of the filter access cover.

Firmly pull the filter cover towards the right (passenger) side of the car.

By sliding the cover to the right, you'll disengage the six plastic hooks that secure it in place.

Set the filter access cover aside in a safe place.

Carefully slide the old air filter straight down and out of the slot.

You'll notice that the slanted corned of the old filter is situated at the top right (passenger) side of the element.

The new filter will be installed in the same orientation.

Clean With Vacuum
Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, leaves, insects, hair, pollen, soot, sand and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the Mann-Filter CUK 2939 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

The OEM filter in this 2016 Tiguan was marked as part number VW AG 1K0 819 644 B (Valeo 983051G-E).

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner.

Then use your other hand to line up the six plastic hooks on the filter access cover with their corresponding holes in the new filter.

Slide the filter cover to the left (driver) side to secure the six plastic hooks in place.
