This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation MK6 (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Volkswagen Jetta in removing the plastic interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM door speakers, add soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or replace a broken power window motor.

Owners of other VW Group vehicles with similar interior door panels such as the Passat, CC, Tiguan, Golf, Touareg, Beetle, GTI, SportWagen, Eos, Rabbit, Bora, Vento, Audi A3, A4, S4, A6, S6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, A5, S5, and TT may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools needed to remove the interior door panel include a small flathead screwdriver, a Torx T30 star bit screwdriver, a Torx T20 screwdriver and a large flathead screwdriver or a plastic automotive panel pry bar tool.

To remove the OEM door speaker, you'll need an electric drill and drill bits to drill out the metal rivets. The power window motor is held in place by Torx T25 screws.

The first step is to gently pry up the rear edge of the switch panel with the small flathead screwdriver.

To help avoid from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of the screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Carefully pull the switch panel up and out of the arm rest.

Turn over the switch panel and press down the release button on the power plug before pulling it straight off.

Continue pulling out the friction fasteners all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel.

Drill Out Speaker Rivets
Now you can pull the door panel away from the door frame and set it aside in a safe place.

The OEM door speaker is held in place by four metal rivets that need to be drilled out. Start with a small drill bit and then work your way up to larger drill bit sizes as necessary.

You can upgrade the OEM door speaker with aftermarket speakers in the following sizes: 5 1/4" (5.25") and 6 1/2" (6.5").

I recommend buying new speakers from Amazon since you can verify that they will fit your car and whether or not you will need a mounting bracket.

If you'd like to reduce road noise and allow your new speakers to sound their best, apply some Dynamat Sound Deadener to the metal door frame. It will help stop the vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume.
