This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the 6th generation MK6 (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 &
2016)
Volkswagen Jetta in removing the plastic interior door panels in
order to upgrade the OEM door speakers, add soundproofing material,
fix a faulty electrical switch or replace a broken power window
motor. Owners of other VW Group vehicles with similar interior door panels such as the Passat, CC, Tiguan, Golf, Touareg, Beetle, GTI, SportWagen, Eos, Rabbit, Bora, Vento, Audi A3, A4, S4, A6, S6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, A5, S5, and TT may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to remove the interior door panel include a small flathead screwdriver, a Torx T30 star bit screwdriver, a Torx T20 screwdriver and a large flathead screwdriver or a plastic automotive panel pry bar tool. To remove the OEM door speaker, you'll need an electric drill and drill bits to drill out the metal rivets. The power window motor is held in place by Torx T25 screws. |

Turn Over Switch Panel |
Power Plug Release Tab |
Press Down Release Tab |
The first step is
to gently pry up the rear edge of the switch panel with the small flathead
screwdriver. To help avoid from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of the screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth. Carefully pull the switch panel up and out of the arm rest. Turn over the switch panel and press down the release button on the power plug before pulling it straight off. |

Remove Electrical Connector |
Torx T30 Arm Rest Screw |
Turn Counter Clockwise |
Hint -
Picture # 1 on this page has been labeled with all of the screw
locations for your convenience.
Remove the one screw that was hidden by the switch panel, near the top of the armrest, by turning it counter clockwise with the Torx T30 screwdriver. |
||
Pliers - Pull Out Screw |
Screw On Bottom Edge |
Remove With Torx T20 |
You may need to use
a pair of needle nose pliers to pull out the arm rest screw. Set the switch panel and screw aside in a safe place. Move to the bottom edge of the door panel and remove the single screw by turning it counter clockwise with the Torx T20 screwdriver. |
||
Lower Torx T-20 Screw |

So Far - 2 Panels & 3 Screws |
Pry Rear of Rectangular Trim |
T30 Screw Below Trim Piece |
At this point, you
should have removed 2 plastic panels and 3 screws. Move to the upper outer edge of the door panel and pry out the rear edge of the long rectangular trim piece. |
||
Rectangular Bar Removed |
Loosen Counter Clockwise |
T30 Screw Removed |
Continue gently
pulling out the friction fasteners on the rear of the rectangular trim bar
as you move towards the front of the door panel. Remove the single screw near the outer edge of the door panel that was hidden by the trim bar by turning it counter clockwise with the Torx T30 screwdriver. Set the trim bar and screw aside in a safe place. |
||
|
||
3 Panels & 4 Screws |
Insert Flathead - Pull Out Bottom |
Plastic Pop Rivet Fasteners |
At this point you
should have removed 3 plastic panels and 4 screws. Carefully insert a flathead screwdriver or an automotive panel removal tool in between the bottom edge of the plastic door panel and the metal frame. Firmly pull out the bottom edge of the door panel to disengage the plastic pop rivet friction fasteners. Continue pulling out the friction fasteners all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel. |
||
Lift Panel Off Door Frame |
Tilt Top Edge Towards You |
Disconnect Power Plug |
Lift the plastic
door panel up and off the lip at the top of the metal door frame. Tilt the top edge of the door panel towards yourself while supporting the bottom with your thighs. Press the release button on the electrical connector and pull the light blue plug straight out of its socket. |
||
Pull Back Release Bar |
Remove Door Opener Assembly |
Door Opener Cable Detached |
The door opener
handle cable is attached to a plastic bracket that clips in to the back of
the door opener handle assembly. Gently pull back the small black plastic bar on the bracket where it meets the black cable to release it from the assembly. Lift the cable and the bracket away from the back of the door opener handle assembly. |

Plastic Door Panel Removed |
Metal Door Frame |
Drill Out Speaker Rivets |
Now you can pull
the door panel away from the door frame and set it aside in a safe place. The OEM door speaker is held in place by four metal rivets that need to be drilled out. Start with a small drill bit and then work your way up to larger drill bit sizes as necessary. You can upgrade the OEM door speaker with aftermarket speakers in the following sizes: 5 1/4" (5.25") and 6 1/2" (6.5"). I recommend buying new speakers from Amazon since you can verify that they will fit your car and whether or not you will need a mounting bracket. If you'd like to reduce road noise and allow your new speakers to sound their best, apply some Dynamat Sound Deadener to the metal door frame. It will help stop the vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume. |

Power Window Motor - T25 |
Hold Panel Near Frame |
Line Up Door Opener Bracket |
The power window
motor is held in place to the door frame by
Torx T-25 screws. To replace the door panel, hold it near the door frame and tilt the top towards yourself while supporting the bottom with your thighs. Re-insert the front edge of the door opener handle cable bracket in first and then gently snap in the rear edge. |
||
Snap In Door Opener Cable |
Push In Power Plug |
Route Switch Panel Plug |
Double check that
the door opener handle cable bracket is securely in place. Push the blue plastic plug for the power door lock switch back in to its socket. Pull the black plastic power plug for the switch panel through the hole in the arm rest. |
||
Pull Out Switch Panel Plug |
Hang Door Panel On Frame |
Replace Torx T30 Screw |
Lower the plastic
door panel and hang it on the lip at the top of the metal door frame. Replace the screw at the top outer corner of the door panel and tighten it in the clockwise direction with the Torx T30 screwdriver. |
||
Line Up Pop Rivets |
Line Up Rectangular Bar |
Push Trim Panel In Place |
Line up the plastic
pop rivets on the back side of the door panel with their corresponding holes
in the metal door frame. Tap on the panel all across the bottom edge and both sides to fully insert the plastic pop rivets. Line up the friction fasteners on the back of the long rectangular trim bar and gently push it back in to place. |
||
Above Storage Pocket |
Attach Screw With Tape |
Replace T30 Screw Clockwise |
I'd recommend
loosely attaching the next two screws to the top of your screwdriver with
some painter's tape or duct tape so that they don't fall down in to the back
side of the door panel. Tighten the screw just below the arm rest and above the storage pocket by turning it clockwise with the Torx T30 screwdriver. |
||
Line Up Plastic Cover |
Push Trim Panel In Place |
Replace Bottom Edge T20 |
Line up the
friction fasteners on the rear of the plastic cover above the storage pocket
and push it back in to place. Replace the screw on the bottom edge of the door panel by turning it clockwise with the Torx T20 screwdriver. |

screw to the screwdriver with some tape and tighten it in the clockwise
direction with the Torx T30 screwdriver. Push the black plastic power plug in to its socket on the bottom of the switch panel. |

panel down over the arm rest and gently push it in to place. Sit in the car, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, power door lock switch and power window switches all work properly. For more, check out my other
