This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and perhaps also the 2015 model year) Toyota Sienna minivan in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the cargo area tail gate door.

Owners of other Toyota vehicles with similar license plate light bulb housing such as the FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, RAV4 and Land Cruiser, may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 168 from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Philips, PIAA and Eiko. You may also use any other miniature wedge base bulb such as the # W5W, 2825, 194 or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to access the bulbs is a flathead screwdriver or an automotive panel removal tool.

The first step is to open the cargo lift gate at the rear of the minivan.

Then insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver, or an automotive panel removal tool, in between the plastic panel on the underside of the tail gate and the painted metal panel.

Gently pry off the plastic panel with the screwdriver to release the white plastic pop rivet friction fasteners.

You will also need to pop out the two plastic hooks on the underside of the plastic panel from the metal tail gate frame.

1/4 Turn Counter Clockwise
Locate the two black plastic license plate light bulb sockets near the middle of the metal tail gate.

Rotate the socket with the burnt out bulb 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull it straight out of the tail gate.

You may also use any other miniature wedge base bulb such as the W5W, 2825, 194 or a brighter LED unit.

Line up the two plastic hooks on the plastic tail gate liner panel and push them back in to their corresponding slots.

Line up the white plastic pop rivet friction fasteners with their corresponding holes in the metal tail gate and push them firmly in to place.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights.
