This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013) Toyota Highlander in changing a burnt out overhead dome light bulb.

Owners of other Toyota or Scion vehicles such as the Tacoma, Corolla, Yaris, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Tundra, Sienna, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Avalon, 4Runner, Sequoia, xB, xD, tC, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement festoon or "fuse" style dome light bulb is part number DE3175 from manufacturers such as Sylvania and GE.

You can also use a brighter LED bulb.

(Some Highlander models might instead have the # 168 miniature wedge base bulb for the dome light.)

The only tool needed to change the bulb is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry out the translucent plastic lens cover.

Remove Old Light Bulb
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Carefully insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in to one of the two notches on the front edge of the lens cover.

Gently pry out the lens cover and set it aside in a safe place.

Pull back on the flexible electrical contact on the left (driver) side to release the old bulb from the socket.

(Tip - If you are replacing the OEM incandescent bulb with a brighter LED unit and it won't work at first, try flipping the bulb around in the socket.)
