How to change the motor oil and replace the filter on the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 engine in a 2013 to 2017 Toyota Avalon.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fourth generation (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and probably also the refreshed 2018 model year) Toyota Avalon sedan in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the 2GR-FE 3.5 liter V6 engine.

Owners of other Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, IS 200t, IS 300, NX 200t, NX 300h, RX 350, RX 450h, LS 460, LS 600h, ES 350, ES 300h Hybrid, RC F, GS 350, CT 200h, LX 570, GX 460, tC, iA, iM, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Toyota 04152-YZZA1, Fram XG9972, Wix 57047, Mobil 1 M1C-251, Purolator L25608, ACDelco PF2259 and Bosch 3972.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, a 14mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch basin, an AST TOY 640 oil filter wrench, a 24mm socket, a 1/2" drive ratchet and an automotive funnel.

Raise Front of Car
The first three steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the car on a level surface and turn off the ignition.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly.

Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and lift out the yellow plastic handled dipstick an inch or two.

Set the oil filler cap aside in a safe place.

Removing the oil filler cap and lifting out the dipstick an inch or two will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Carefully raise the front of the vehicle with the floor jack. There is a central jacking point on the underside of the engine bay.

Securely support the car with at least two jack stands.

Silver Metal Filter Cap
Slide under the front of the car with the used oil catch container, a 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench.

Locate the black metal oil pan and the silver metal oil filter housing.

The silver metal oil drain bolt is located on the back side of the oil pan near an exhaust pipe with the bolt head facing back towards the rear of the car.

The round silver metal oil filter housing and cap are located just in front of the oil pan.

Drain Out Old Oil
Position the used oil catch container just below the oil drain bolt.

Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Loosen the oil drain bolt by turning it counterclockwise with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Spin out the oil drain bolt and set it aside in a safe place.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows to just an occasional drip.

If the oil drain bolt is equipped with a metal or felt crush washer, inspect it and replace it if necessary.

The replacement oil drain bolt gasket is part number Toyota 90430-12031.

Make sure that the old washer is not still attached to the engine.

Spin the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction by hand to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Under Filter Housing
Tighten the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet to just past hand tight or about 30 lb-ft of torque.

Double check that the oil drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps.

Slide the used oil catch container forward to just below the oil filter housing.

Loosen Counterclockwise
An optional step is to drain out the old oil from the filter housing by removing the drain plug.

Loosen the oil filter housing drain plug by turning it counterclockwise with a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Attach the Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640 oil filter socket wrench to the 24mm socket and a 1/2" drive ratchet.

(You can also use any other oil filter wrench that is 64mm with 14 flats or "flutes" such as the Toyota SST Special Service Tool number 09228-06500-02 or # 09228-06501.)

Loosen the filter cap in the counterclockwise direction.

Insert Automotive Funnel
Allow the old oil to drain out from the filter housing for at least a minute or two.

Pull the old cartridge oil filter out of the housing and discard it.

Pry the old rubber o-ring gasket off the bottom of the threads on the filter cap and discard it.

Dip your finger in to some new SAE 0W-20 oil and lubricate the new rubber o-ring gasket.

Push the new rubber o-ring on to the bottom of the threads on the filter cap.

Push the new filter in to the cap until it clicks securely in to place.

I recommend purchasing the genuine OEM Toyota 04152-YZZA1 oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Spin on the filter housing by hand a few turns in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the oil filter cap in the clockwise direction with the 64mm filter wrench to approximately 1/4 to 1/3 turn past hand tight or about 18 lb-ft of torque.

Try to avoid over tightening the filter cap to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring gasket.

Double check that the oil drain bolt and the filter cap are tight before moving on to the next step.

Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole.

Push Down Dipstick
The 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 engine's specification for an oil change with filter replacement is 6.4 US quarts (or 6.1 liters).

Pour in about 5 to 5.5 U.S. quarts of the engine's 6.4 quart total capacity in to the oil filler hole. It is far better to have slightly less oil in an engine than necessary than to have too much.

You may not need to pour in the entire 6.4 U.S. quarts of new SAE 0W-20 oil depending on how long you drained out the old oil.

Spin on the oil filler cap in the clockwise direction and push down the dipstick.

Oil Change Complete

Run the engine for a few minutes, turn off the ignition, and wait at least 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain back down to the oil pan.

Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level.

If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the dipstick until the level reaches just at or below the upper metal dot.

Be sure to record the oil change in your service records. Watch your drive way or garage floor for drops of fresh oil that may indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the filter housing. It's also a good idea to check the level on the dipstick during the next few days.

To reset the oil life system and turn off the "Maint Reqd" (maintenance required) light follow these steps:

1. Switch the display to "Trip A" and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position (or for vehicles with the smart key system, turn it off with the "Engine Start / Stop" switch)

2. Hold down the trip meter reset button while turning the ignition key to the "On" position but do not start the engine (for the smart key system, tap the engine start button once to turn on the ignition)

3. Continue holding the reset button until trip meter A displays "000000". (If your Avalon has the multi-information display, you'll see the word "Complete" appear on the display.

4. Release the trip meter reset button, the "Maint Reqd" light should now be off.
