How to replace the low beam, high beam and front side marker light bulbs in the headlights of a 2003-2009 4Runner.

Low Beam, Center

Low Beam Bulb Base

This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 2003 to 2009 Toyota 4Runner SUV in replacing a burnt out low beam, high beam or front side marker light bulb in the headlight assemblies.

Owners of other related Toyota or Lexus vehicles such as the Hilux, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, T100, SW4, FJ Cruiser, Fortuner and Lexus GX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Replacement headlight bulbs for the 03-09 4Runner from Sylvania and other manufacturers are as follows with their respective part numbers: Low Beam # 9006, High Beam # 9005, and Front Side Marker # 168 Amber (or 194, 192 amber).

No tools are needed to replace the headlight bulbs. A pair of pliers can be useful for turning the sidemarker bulb socket.

Grab Base of Low Beam

1/4 Turn Counter Clockwise

Low Beam Bulb Removed

The Low Beam bulb is located at the center of the headlight assembly. To remove it, grasp the light grey base of the bulb and rotate it 1/4 turn counter clockwise before pulling it straight out of the headlight.

Press Release Tab

Pull Off Power Connector

Separate the red power connector from the base of the bulb by pushing down on the release tab.

Sylvania # 9006 HB4

Connect Power To New Bulb

Insert New Low Beam Bulb

Push the low beam power connector on to the base of a new # 9006 bulb and insert it into the headlight assembly. Rotate the base of the bulb 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

High Beam - Near Grille

The High Beam bulb is located near the grille close to the center line of the vehicle.

1/4 Turn Counter Clockwise

High Beam Removed

To remove the high beam bulb, grasp the black base and rotate it 1/4 turn counter clockwise before pulling it straight out of the headlight assembly.

Push Down Release Tab

Disconnect Power Plug

Sylvania # 9005 Bulb

Separate the power connector from the base of the high beam bulb by pushing down on the release tab.

Connect New 9005 Bulb

Insert Bulb In Headlight

1/4 Turn Clockwise

Push the power connector on to the base of a new # 9005 high beam bulb. Insert the bulb into the headlight assembly and rotate the base 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

Front Sidemarker Light

Side Marker Bulb Socket

1/4 Turn Counter Clockwise

The Front Side Marker light bulb is located at the corner of the headlight assembly closest to the outer edge of the vehicle.

You may be able to remove the front side marker bulb by rotating the socket 1/4 turn counter clockwise with just your fingers. I found it too difficult to rotate with my fingers and had to use a pair of needle nose pliers to turn the socket.

Old Front Side Marker Bulb

Pull Old Bulb Straight Out

Insert New Bulb

Pull the old # 168 Amber front side marker light bulb straight out of the socket. Push in a new # 168 Amber bulb straight into the socket. Any other amber (orange / yellow) colored T3 1/4 wedge light bulb such as # 192, 194 or 2825A will also fit into the front side marker socket.

Insert the bulb into the headlight and rotate the socket 1/4 turn clockwise to lock it in place.

1/4 Turn Clockwise

Testing New Bulb(s)

Test the new bulbs by turning on the headlights, flash the high beams, and activate the hazard signals.
