back window of a 2nd generation 2008 to 2014 Smart Fortwo city car.
2013 Fortwo Rear Wiper |
Lift Wiper Arm Off Window |
Rotate Away Old Blade |
This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the second generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
and 2014) Smart Fortwo compact city car in changing the rear wiper
blade on the back windshield window. Owners of any Smart Fortwo models or trim levels such as the coupe hatchback, cabriolet or "cabrio", electric, pure, passion, forfour, prime and proxy may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM rear wiper blade part number is Smart 4518240126 (also known as part # 451-824-01-26 or 451-820-01-45). A few other compatible replacement aftermarket wiper blades with their part numbers are as follows: Valeo R10A, AutoTex R1-11 R1 and Valeo 10D. No tools are needed to remove and change the rear wiper blade. |

Pop Bar Out of Socket |
Old Wiper Blade Removed |
"C" Shaped Socket |
The first step is
to lift the rear wiper arm off the back window until it remains in the
raised position by itself. Then gently rotate the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm. Continue rotating the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm until you feel or hear the mounting bar in the middle of the wiper blade pop out of the "C" shaped socket at the end of the wiper arm. Pull the old wiper blade towards the right (passenger) side of the car to remove it from the arm. |

Mounting Bar - Wiper Blade |
Line Up New Wiper Blade |
Insert Bar In To Socket |
Line up the new
wiper blade and the wiper arm with the rubber blade facing away from the
car. I recommend buying the genuine OEM Smart 4518240126 rear wiper blade since it fits perfectly. (The OEM wiper blade is about 10.5" (10 1/2) inches in size. The compatible aftermarket wiper blades are either slightly shorter at 10" or slightly longer at 11" in length.) Insert the mounting bar in the center of the new wiper blade in to the "C" shaped socket at the end of the wiper arm. Pull the new wiper blade towards the left (driver) side of the car to secure it to the wiper arm. |
||
Installing New Blade |
Rotate Blade Parallel |
Lower Arm To Window |
Rotate the new
wiper blade until it is parallel with the wiper arm. Double check that the new wiper blade is securely attached to the wiper arm. Gently lower the rear wiper blade back down to the window. For the best wiper performance, I recommend cleaning off the windshield and applying a glass treatment product that will repel water such as Rain-X. For more, check out all of my
