How to change a burnt out side marker
light bulb in the front quarter panel of a 2nd generation 2008 to 2014 Smart

This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the second generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
and 2014) Smart Fortwo compact city car in changing a burnt out side
marker light bulb located in the front quarter panel. Owners of any Smart Fortwo models or trim levels such as the coupe hatchback, cabriolet or "cabrio", electric, pure, passion, forfour, prime and proxy may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement amber colored miniature wedge base bulb part number is WY5W or 2827. You can also use a compatible amber (yellow) LED bulb. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. |

Locate Silver Metal Tab |
Push In Metal Clip |
The first step is
to open the driver or the passenger door depending on which side marker
light bulb you need to replace. Locate the top black metal door hinge. Look for the silver metal retaining clip on the other side of the hinge. Use a flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool to gently push the silver metal retaining clip in towards the front of the car. Then push the back side of the light housing out of the front quarter panel. |

Remove Light Housing |
Move to the outside of the car and gently pull the side marker light housing out of the front quarter panel. | ||
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Remove Bulb Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Rotate the bulb
socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the light
housing. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Push In New WY5W Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Re-Insert Front Edge |
Push a new amber
(or yellow) colored miniature wedge base number
WY5W or
2827 light bulb straight in to the
socket. If you want to have brighter side marker lights, choose compatible replacement LED bulbs. Re-insert the bulb socket in to the light housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. |

Gently Pop In Retaining Clip |
Light Housing Replaced |
Test New Light Bulb |
Re-insert the front
edge of the light housing in to the front quarter body panel. Then gently snap in the rear edge to secure the metal retaining clip. To test the new light bulb, turn on the parking lights or the headlights. For more, check out all of my
