I've always
been a fan of themed costume parties and Halloween is by far my
favorite holiday. So when I heard about this "Santacon" worldwide
phenomenon, I knew I had to be a part of it. The closest event to our area was organized by the West Palm 100, which is a civic and social charitable organization of young professionals. We joined their Santacon Pub Crawl along CityPlace and Clematis Street in Downtown West Palm Beach, Florida on December 8th 2007. All of the Santas first gathered at E.R. Bradley's Saloon and then took the free City of West Palm Beach Trolley to the Brewzzi's Microbrewery in CityPlace. The next stop on the pub crawl was supposed to be the Blue Martini Lounge but it was closed so we soldiered on to Wet Willie's for some frozen drinks. |

The 4th stop of the West Palm Beach Santacon was at O'Shea's Irish Pub on Clematis St. We broke off from the group after O'Shea's, but a few of the brave Santas kept spreading holiday cheer late into the night. |

The first Santa Convention, or "SantaCon" for short, was organized in 1994 by the Cacophony Society (public pranksters) of San Francisco. Since then other similarly themed events have sprung up across the world such as Santarchy, Santa Rampage, Santapalooza, Cheapsuit Santas, Santaoke, and Naughty Santas. |

Most
Santacons are held just for the joy of a flash mob that bounces around to
various bars and clubs in a metropolitan area.
Some of the other activities that might take place during one of these events include singing naughty x-mas carols, handing out gifts or candy to children, picking up trash from city streets, paying parking tickets, publicity stunts, Santa parades, raising money for charity, and harmless public pranks. |

The vast majority of Santa Convention attendees wear the traditional red Santa Claus suit but some of the other costumes that are common include Mrs. Claus, Rudolph the Reindeer, Elves, and Snow Princesses. A few of the more creative variations on the traditional Santa costume have mixed in other themes such as zombies, Harley Davidson bikers, Rastafarians, pirates, Elvis, Jewish, Mexican, Luchador wrestler, punk rockers, and cowboys. |

Since the first event in 1996, Santacon has spread around the world to places like Antarctica, Moscow, Munich, London, Tokyo, Paris, Thailand, Sweden, Cambodia, Australia, Mexico City, Canada, and New Zealand. There was even a Santacon that was took place in the "Second Life" virtual internet world for people who couldn't make it to a real life convention. |
